I was watching a movie on my computer last night, when all of a sudden it froze (never happened in XP before). Alt-Crt-Del didn't work and I noticed the hard drive access light was lit continuously. Perplexed, I tried to restart the machine, only to find out that my reset button no longer worked. Really odd right?? So i shut it down and tried restarting, only i got a blank screen. Everything turned on, fans, hard disks and all, but nothing on screen, only that HD access light on.
So i unplugged it from the wall, and tried restarting again. This time the monitor turned back on and it showed the standard energy star page and:
"Main Processor - Duron 750"
it appeared that it was booting properly except that it didn't make it past that, no memory tests, no hard drive tests, nothing else on screen, only the HD access light. so i tried looking at the diagnostic leds, and they indicated "Bios sign ON" - Useless. I turned if off and turned it on again, and got a blank screen and a different error code, this time: "Memory detection test".
i repeatedly tried turning it on and off to no avail, only blank screens. I unplugged it again and replugged it and got the energy star logo and processor identfication line, but nothing else. when i turned it off and turned it on again, i was back to a blank screen. Each time the diagnostic LEDs showed something different. I initially thought it might be the RAM so i put it in a friend's machine, but it worked fine and his computer booted. Memory is fine apparently. then i took out everything except my video card, cpu and RAM, to see if it would at least give me a "system disk not found error" - Nothing, blank screens or the hang at the bios screen.
At this point i think its either the mobo or cpu. I tried taking the cpu out to test it, and ended up breaking off the plastic knob that you attach the heat sink too. the whole mobo seems useless now.
Anyone have any ideas whats wrong?? Any suggestions on fixes?? I really need help, all my school work is on that machine and i need it up and running quick. All help will be appreciated!!!
System specs:
MSI KT7 Pro2-a
Duron 750
256 MB pc133 generic
ATI Radeon LE
those were the only things in the system when it hangs, doesn't even ask me for a system disk
