Just got a brand new r9 290 msi card from newegg.

It has noticeable coil whine when in bf4. How common is this problem? What are the chances a replacement would have the same issue?

It's fairly common with the reference 290s. I would RMA it and hope for a good replacement.

I was wrong.

It's my power supply that is producing the noise. Didn't do it with my GTX570 but it sure makes a lot of noise with this R9.

Good to know it isn't the video card at least.

define whine (no pun /well..) - is it high pitched as in *very* high pitched? Your father wouldnt hear it, but it bugs the hell out of you? You could be looking at a bad psu, worn out capacitor(s) (they will build up preassure, break a little and play the dog-flute).

pc power and cooling silencer 750w

It's a high pitched buzz.

I don't have many other components hooked up in the system. Just a 128GB SSD, 1 tb external usb wd passport, and a bluray drive.

Apparently yah it's enough to tax the crap out of the ps. Replacing it is now on the list of things to do.

Well, for reference, I had a PSU do the high pitch whine on me once, over time it turned to bsods and failing ram.. just a FYI if you begin to experience other abnormalities

If it's the PSU I get that fixed real fast I'd think personally.

Yeah actually good to hear it's not the GPU.
