MSI pro2 horror story!

Some of you may remember a while back that I posted a message about a dead cpu. Well, I was sure it was the cpu and when I finally got a new one I put it in and everything worked fine for awhile. After about 5 hours later the same symptoms occurred. Four red lights, blank screen and nothing but the motherboard acutally speaking to me and saying that "processor might be damaged or not inserted properly...".

Only this time one thing was different. I could smell burned solder. You know that hot smell burning smell. Well , after grabbing a flashlight and checking everything I notice that two of these flat roughly 1cm almost square black components are not where they should be. You can see where they are supposed to be soldered onto the board, but the solder has melted enough to allow gravity to pull them down so they no longer make contact where they should. I have no idea why the second cpu worked at all. I am sure these loose components were the source of my original problem. I did take the board out of the case for an extended period of time and reset the cmos between cpus. I am posting this, because this forum is a great way of sharing experiences and I already know of one other person who had the same thing happen to them. Next time you see an MSI thread about not booting up and 4 red leds you might be able to reccomend a look-see at the four square parts close to the cpu socket. May save some troubleshooting effort for someone.

Thanks

By the way, I am rmaing the board but will have a hard time trusting it. Ordered an epox, cause I have built three computers with epox boards and all are running to this day. All have been very reliable.

Lemons from all board makers do happen. I have the same board (pro2)on my 2nd PC, I got it when it first came out months ago. Its been trouble-free and ultra stable. I haven't had a single hiccup from it at all. Its a good thing it was still under warranty. How was the RMA process with MSI?

I agree. Even the best companies let a few bad ones out. I just remember how many threads I have seen about MSI boards not posting or giving 4 red leds. I have already found one other person whome this happened to, and thought that I would post this so others would know to look for the problem.

Like I said in my post mine was rock solid until the first hard crash. It just bugs me when components move like that. Anyway, when I thought it was just the cpu I purchased a 1 ghz AXIA 266 fsb cpu. So when I diagnosed the board problem, it was not a difficult decision to get a board that would actually let me use the 266fsb.

Anyway since the board and chip were under warranty I can replace my second computer (k6-3 450) with something a little better now.

I RMA'd it through the company I bought it from. Pretty good rma service through Multiwave.
