MSI P67A-GD65 Faint popping sound...

I recently built a new computer and I have a slight repetitive popping/cracking over my computer speakers when sound is played. It happens on both the front and back audio jacks with speakers or my headphones.
My system specs are....
CPU: 3.3ghz intel i5
Mobo: MSI P67A-GD65
GPU: Radeon HD 6950
PSU: XFX 650W
OS: Windows 7 64 bit

The only other weird thing my computer does is my usb wifi mouse wont work without randomly being really laggy but it works fine on other computers.

Also I have a 2nd hdd with ubuntu on it and when I boot to that drive the popping sound goes away (so must be windows/driver related?).

Ive tried the drivers on the cd that came with my mobo, and I've also update to latest version online.

Try disabling USB 3.0 in the bios and see if that has an effect, also try a different mouse.
Read This.

I would think the mouse and sound issue are related, could be anything from grounding issues to something simple like chipset drivers, but ive never had this board so i don't know for sure.

I'd start searching here.

Thanks MTDEW, I disabled USB3.0 to no avail so I made a reply to that thread and I'm sure they can help me out.

Bump for you.
Hoping someone who has this board will help you out there.

We don't have an "official" thread for the MSI P67A-GD65 in the motherboard section or i would suggest you post it there.

Saw your post on the MSi forums and the replies were less than helpful, being a B2 or B3 board shouldnt have anything to do with this.

I'm shooting in the dark here, i'd try disabling any HD audio that is installed with your 6950 and any mic/line inputs in the realtek settings.
I'd disable the HD audio for the 6950 in control panel and in device manager.
Turn off and 3d in Realtek and any effects and use 2spkr.
Unplug any usb devices including the front case header on the mobo.

After that i'd try disabling the realtek and try a standalone soundcard.

And if neither of those worked, i'd be sure the mobo isnt grounding on the case somewhere.

Try plugging the pc into a different outlet in your home that isnt on the same line as the outlet its plugged into now.

If none of those work, believe it or not i'd try a different PSU and be sure to try one that someone is already using with this board who isnt having the issue. (i've seen certain mobo/psu combos cause all kinds of weird noises)

I know most people dont have other pc's to be able to swap out parts at will, so try looking to see if someone else has the same psu/mobo combo and no issues.

Try editing your post topic to say MSI P67A-GD65 faint popping sound, so maybe people who actually own this board will notice and read your thread.

Anyway, here is a bump.
Good luck to you.

MTDEW, thanks for the bump.

Ill try disabling that stuff. About the stand alone card or a different psu, my massive computer experience (not much...) is telling me this MUST be a software issue, otherwise why would running linux OS change anything? I have booted into ubuntu 4 or 5 times to check and every time the sound issues disappear (have yet to try with my wifi usb mouse in ubuntu).

Even though I'm sure its a software thing Ill try a different outlet also (and the power-strip i have it on is 5, maybe 10 years old). And I've tried unplugging all usb devices (including mouse) and no change.

What would cause grounding of the mobo on the case?

If its working with Ubuntu would it be worth it at all to try installing a copy of XP that I have and see if there are issues? And the Ubuntu is 32bit if that makes a difference.

Usually a mobo grounding to a case is due to an extra un-noticed standoff that isnt needed being installed since most cases have an extra hole for a standoff around the pci / pcie slots that most mobos dont use any more.
This usually happens when people insert all the standoffs without first being sure there is a mounting hole in the mobo for all of them.
Anyway, that is somewhat easy to test as you can just hook up the mobo outside the case.(on a piece cardboard like the mobo box or other non-conductive material.)

Your reasoning for a driver issue does seem sound, until you think about how many people are using the same motherboard with no issues.

Since most are probably using the latest drivers same as you are , that leads you to ask what is different about your setup compared to theirs.

That is not saying it couldnt be driver related since you could have used different drivers for some of your hardware than they did or simply installed them in a different order.
Or updated to the latest drivers without completely un-installing/cleaning the old drivers.
Heck it can even be as simple as you having some extra program installed that loads on startup and runs in the backround that your running in Win7 and not ubuntu.

Just a thought.. you might as well swap the motherboard header that you have the ubuntu drive plugged into with the one you have Win7 on and see if that matters since that is pretty simple to do.

Is there anyway I can have sound in safe mode to test if it could be cause by a background program?

Also after reading your last post the 2nd or 3rd time through I realized I don't even recall if there was a problem before I added the 2nd hdd. When I added the 2nd hdd I do remember changing the port my main drive was plugged into, dont see why this would do anything but who knows when your dealing with the wonderful world of computers (magic is the only explanation for how they run😉)

Ill try that first and see if it works. If it doesnt Ill try running the mobo outside the case. How difficult is this? This was my first computer build and I remember it being quite a hassle to get the mobo mounted and everything in there and all those little plugs put in (And my cpu heatsink is huge...) I assume its much easier once everything is basically plugged in. idk I guess ill take a look and I'm sure its different for every case/mobo. On the bright side the first time I forgot to put on the back panel for the mobo that has all the labels for the ports, so I can do that this time.

AHA!!!:biggrin: I was seconds away from shutting down to swap ports the hdd was plugged into when I suddenly remembered a random post on that msi forum topic. Some guy said something about possible interference from there NETGEAR pci wifi card. So I disable it in device manager, bam, fixed.

I'm assuming it's some incompatibility with the windows sound drivers and netgear drivers, which is why it works with ubuntu. Do you think there is anyway to fix this? perhaps an alternate netgear driver, its a netgear rangemax wn311b (im looking but doubt it)? If not I'm guessing my only option is find another pci wifi card, any recommendations? (that was the only one they had a best buy, should have just shopped online and prolly saved money too....)

EDIT: Turns out all I had to do was reinstall the netgear drivers, thanks for all your help MTDEW!
