I recently picked up an MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC card, and while I'm happy with it's performance I'm not happy with how noisy it's fan is.. it's the loudest thing in my case.

Curiously, the fan has two plugs coming off it.. I've read in a couple reviews that one can be used to run the fan at 5v instead of 12 so it won't be so annoyingly loud, though none give details. But looking closer at these plugs.. the socket on the card is 4 pin, but this second plug is only 3 pin, and it appears that the only difference is the red and black wires have been switched in position.

Does anybody else who has this card know how to easily down-volt the fan with those plugs? I understand the idea behind undervolting a fan with standard molex connectors, but no adapter I have will fit the plugs on this thing, and I don't want to do something foolish that would damage a $180 purchase.

Thanks.

You might want to check the forums of silentpcreview.com, people there should be able to help you.

It looks like this is a similar arrangement as on the MSI 8600GT OC.

Look at the fan discussion on this page, under Noise Levels

It seems it is possible to connect the 5V header directly without any adapter.

Looking at the pics of MSI 8600GT OC and MSI 8600GTS on Newegg, it appears both have the same 3-pin 5V connector,

MSI are not stupid. There has to be a way of 5-volting the fan without an adapter. I would try to see if the 3 pins can connect to 3 of the 4 pins on the fan header.

For anyone else scouring the net looking for an answer I've just tried it with my MSI 8600GT OC and the 3 pin plug goes on the top 3 pins as you look at it, i.e.

It's much quieter now and my sanity has been restored!

I got the MSI 8600gts OC and yes once in a blue moon (1 time every 2 days) for a few seconds it runs at full fan speed ..Oh my god is it loud..but it doesnt last long..Sounds to me like you guys have the fans running full blast from factory....Personally I could due with full fan speed and noise to overclock it some more ^^
