MSI Neo 4 Platinum - USB Delayed Write Failure

I'm running a AMD 3200+ on a MSI Neo 4 Platinum motherboard with Corsair TWINX10243200XL RAM. I'm experiencing problems with an external USB 2.0 harddrive enclosure. I can transfer files under 100MB to this device with no problem, however if I start moving files larger than this I get delayed write failure messages and my system becomes locked up or very slow until I remove the device. My system is not overclocked and I have tried multiple USB ports. The bios on the board is 1.3. I'm running XP SP2. It also seems that if the drive is powered on the system won't POST. Anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?
