MSI KT4V + Athlon XP 2200 FSB Adjustments...Argghhh!!!

I bought this combo along with 512Mb of Samsung PC3200 400mhz DDR RAM (MSI recommended). I want to open up the FSB in the BIOS higher than 133. I know the CPU is a 1.8 Ghz and would adjust the multiplier accordingly so not to actually overclock it. I want to take the FSB higher (because the RAM supports up to 200mhz) to see about perfromance gains. Instead this is what I get... First off, I have the latest BIOS. When I go into COU clock settings in the BIOS menu, and try to set the CPU multiplier to anything besides the default "AUTO" setting, it will not reboot. I have to short the CMOS to get it to boot again and go in a reset all my stuff. I have read where people change the FSB all day long without a hitch. This board has the KT400 chipset and have read where people have had good success doing this. I also think that my Athlon XP is of the 266 variety. Does anyone have this board and can offer any insight?

I don't have any love for MSI boards so I've little knowledge of them now, and I haven't played with AMD CPUs in a good while (need to fix that soon! ) but if that 2200+ is the original t-bredA they are very poor overclockers and you might need to up the CPU voltage to get anything extra out of it. It'd be wise to keep the memory timings relaxed to say 2.5-3-3-7-1T and up the Vdimm to 2.6-2.7 if that board allows it too, and using the VIA Hyperion 4.45 4in1 drivers with that chipset is a good idea from what I've read. I just checked some user reviews and it looks like the opinions are very mixed but not too many claiming good overclocks using that board maybe someone will post up in this thread with some very specific info for your benefit *hint*hint* people

Hey PUN. I tweaked the mess out of this thing last night for 3 hours. I have finally came to a determination...I'm selling teh AMd combo and going to buy the Asus 533 board with a 2.4Ghz Northwood. Thanks for all the info PUN, take it light!

try getting a XP 2100+ T-Bred B and a Abit NF7(-S)
this combo can oc to around 2.3-2.5GHz

Guy, as I mentioned before, you have to unlock the CPU if you want to change the multiplier Try here for some useful info.

You shoulda done some homework before buying, MSI are poor overclockers, and the KT400 is a slow chip compared to the Nforce 2.

Hey again Mech. Man, I took a look at that website and that stuff intimidated the hell out of me. I don't know how to "paint" on the CPU and don't think I have the backbone to start either. I'll just suffer until I get my P4. Thanks for the info!

((It shouldn't be this hard to toy with your system. I had the first Athlon 500mhz CPU and had loads of trial & error issues with it. I thought by now AMD had their stuff together, but they still seem to be as tempermental as the first generation Athlon. I'm not an Intel fan-boy or anything, I just want something easy to play with.))

I'm not knocking your decision to switch to the P4 but I do want to clarify that the P4 is fully multiplier-locked and your playground is going to get smaller, not bigger. You will be able to dabble with your FSB and your CPU/RAM divider. Am I missing anything guys?
