MSI K9N PLATINUM NFORCE 570 Question

I just ordered this motherboard via Newegg:

MSI K9N Platinum NForce 750

I've been hearing a lot about how AM2 motherboards are notoriously fickle about what kind of memory they'll take. Unfortunately, I know nothing about memory voltage. Can anyone check out the board and explain to me what kind of voltage RAM I need?

The last time I built a new PC, all I had to worry about was which speed DDR I wanted, and since it only supported up to DDR333 it was a pretty easy decision.

I will most likely be mixing different DDR2 RAM chips until I can put together an additional $300 for a nice set.

On the MSI website it says the following but I don't really understand what it means:

? Supports 1.8v DDR2 SDRAM DIMM
Due to the High Performance Memory design, motherboards or system configurations may or may not operate smoothly at the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) standard settings (BIOS Default on the motherboard) such as DDR2 voltage, memory speeds and memory timing. Please confirm and adjust your memory setting in the BIOS accordingly for better system stability.
Example: Kingston HyperX DDR2-800 PC-6400 operates at 2.0V, 4-4-4-12.
For more information about specification of high performance memory modules, please check with your Memory Manufactures for more details.

I have this board and I use OCZ DDR2 PC2-5400 667MHz Gold XTC ram (dual channel 1 gig) at 1.9 volts.

This board wasn't fussy at all. Just make sure you get the latest BIOS.

all in all I like this board as it comes pretty much loaded and very stable so far.

I am sure you will like it. Make sure your power supply is a good one.

I currently have an Antec TruePower 2 430W power supply that seems to be in good shape. I'm going to try to use it in the new machine.

So I found some Samsung DDR2667 chips that are listed as 1.8v, hopefully they'll work in this motherboard. The real trouble is going to occur later on when I pay for some DDR2800 RAM and it doesn't work because of voltage requirements. It's all very confusing to me.

I was considering overclocking the CPU but after learning that AM2 chipsets are a whole different beast from the old AMD Athlon XP chipsets, I'm pretty frightened of trying when I receive these new parts.

AMD got rid of the FSB in the K8, replaced it with an on die memory controller and hypertransport links. It means that the memory is no longer accessed through the northbridge, so the HTT links have nothing to do with your memory, which really cuts down on latency problems etc.

I forget the exact formula that determines everything, but someone in CPU/Processors and Overclocking can help you out. Anyway, it is more complicated, but it doesn't seem too terrible. I know there is an AMD overclocker's guide around here somewhere, but it eludes me for now...

Edit: Don't know what happened with that link 😱 but I did one better and found the actual A64 OCing guide
