The x3800 is about all you're going to find out there right now. Why don't you go ahead and take this opportunity to move up to an am2 or 775 system. I wouldn't invest any more money into s939.

well, I checked msi's website very thoroughly when I bought the fx 55 last year (or so I thought), but I went ahead and did some more research this time. Come to find out, I can get an opteron 180 or an x2 4800 toledo. see info here: http://global.msi.com.tw/index...=165&maincat_no=1#menu

I could even use an fx 60 so I'm assuming that an opteron 185 would be fine, too. new egg has an opteron 185 for $249 or I could go budget and get an x2 4400 for $139.

I don't really want to buy a new system quite yet since I am holding out for nehalem, or, barrying that, at least penryn/barcelona. I don't play oblivion or anything that caused the old processor any problems, so I can probably hold out for a while if everything holds up.

Of course, I could just hold out until july 22, buy a q6600 for 266, a kandalf for 280, etc...

Well you asked what the highest x2 cpu was and the x3800 is all that is left in the channel right now. The opty is a good cpu, I ran a 175 in an abit fatal1ty an8 for a little over a year and it was pretty sport but doesn't compare to my c2d. A file that would take it 20 seconds to decode take my c2d 8 seconds. If you're content with staying on s939 then an opty is your best solution.

yeah, I needed to do some research. What I should have originally said was, "What is the best socket 939 processor on the market?". It appears to be the opteron 185, which is currently $249 on newegg. Now that I know that my processor is NOT dead, however, I think I'll just keep the fx55 and save the $250 for my new system next year.

Just out of curiosity, has anybody actually seen an opteron 185 in a k8n neo 4 platinum? I saw a post earlier on newegg by somebody with a k8n neo 4f who says that msi told him that the board does NOT support the opteron 185. I have just assumed that it would because the fx 60 is officially supported and they are essentially the same chip.
