Hello,

Over the last few days I've been having several problems with a new build:

MSI K8n Neo4-F
AMD 3500+ Single
2 gb Crucial DDR 400 (4 single sided 512 Dimms)
XTX 7800 GT PCIE
WD Raptor SATA
Windows XP Pro

Essentially the issue has been random lockups along with occasional hard reboots.

I originally thought this was a software/driver compatibility as I've seen suggested issues with Nvidia IDE drivers, but I've run the system with various options of old NVidia drivers, new Nvidia, windows only drivers, mostly windows with limited Nvidia (such as AC 97 audio) etc., all with the same result. (All on factory BIOS settings version 1.0a and same issues in 1.0b). I swapped power supplies, video card, etc. with various hardware power up combinations all with the same result.

I reduced memory to a single 512 mb dimm and everything ran stable.
Added second dimm for dual channel... everything still good.
Added third dimm... lockups and crashes.
Replaced dimm in slot 3 with my remaining unconnected 4th dimm ... lockups and crashes.

Naturally I checked all 4 dimms in memtest but all 4 passed without incident in slot 1. This led me to believe that I had a bad 3rd dimm slot on the mb.

I rma'd the board, but to my frustration I am experiencing the exact same problems with the new board. Chances are that the 3rd dimm slot cannot be bad on 2 boards, and I have swapped all 4 of my sticks in various combinations in dimm slot 1 and 2 and have run stable, so my problem does not appear to be a bad stick.

As I said above all Bios settings are factory default. Am I such a noob that I am completely missing a simple BIOS setting that needs to be changed?

Thanks for any suggestions!
