My Neo2 worked great right out of the box with the OCZ 520W PS, 2 x balistix 512, 3500+ and an eVga GF 6800. My 12V rail was hovering around 12.1 so I upped the potentiometer to make it more like 12.4. This was the easiest and most trouble free system I have ever built. Maybe I just got the golden sample Neo2, but it is a rock stable board with awesome performance.

Does this problems apply to the MSI K8N Neo-FSR also? (Socket 754)..... I'll be ordering my new computer parts today and I was going to get that one for a A64 2800+

I'm recycling my old case with 350W PSU, nothing fancy, just a normal case and PSU.

Take into account that I'm still on time to change my decision and get a Chaintech VNF-250 instead.

I have bought 4 of these boards and they work great with no stability problems.

graphics = 3 ASUS V9999gt 6800 gt 128 mb + 1 Gainward 6800 NU 128

am using 3 ENERMAX Coolergiant 480W Model "EG485AX-VHB SFMA 2.0"

the 4th is using an older 460 watt enermax with ACTIVE PFC. This is active power filtration, a chip (i believe) regulates the power flow on the rails constantly. The coolergiant model has pfc and two discreet rails. This is similar to high end multi channel audio amplifiers.

I really cant say enough about the enermax coolergiant , its gotta be the most impressive ps i've ever had my hands on. Hear lots of good things about the OCZ's as well.

Performance with the 6800 gt on the neo2 is very impressive.

The linux demo for doom3 doesnt have the timedemo but I have rarely seen the fps drop below 60 at 1600x1200 HQ settings. screenshot
3Dmark 03 11823 with gaphics card slightly ocd via smartdoctor.

3 of the machines have been running for a few weeks now (1 suse 2 winXP)

I am building the last machine tonight and will post about its behavior.

rats.......... I was just about set on getting the Msi board and then stumbled onto this thread....sooooooooo tired of waiting and seeing... sounds like the asus board may be the board to go with.... makes me wonder if anandtech's board was "sugarcoated"...

I'm having a serious problem with this board. First, the VGA sometimes doesn't get detected so the mointor doesnt turn on. Then my ddr400 is found as 333. I just installed it today. IT was a mobo cpu switch. So the big problem is i pass post and after the windows loading screen it restarts everytime. WTF!!!1

Steering away from this board now. The lack of good NF3 939 boards is just mind boggling! Where's ASUS and ABIT when you need them?

I was going to go for this system, at monarch (pre tested). But I don't think I can trust pre tested since they wouldn't be using my power supply (Enermax 350w) and vid card PNY 6800GT.

800018 Shin-Etsu G675 Thermal Grease Installation 1 $14.00 $14.00
800025 Pre-Tested and Setup AMD Athlon 64/FX (939) Combo 1 $0.00 $0.00
Motherboard: 110228 - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum Audio/GB-LAN/USB/IE $149.00 $149.00
Processor: 120423 - AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 512K 90nm (939) $279.00 $279.00
Heatsink Fan: 130129 - Thermaltake A1838 AMD Opteron/Athlon 64 H $19.50 $19.50
Memory: 140252 - DDR (400) 3200 - 1 GB (2 pcs 512) Corsair $257.00 $257.00
2nd Memory: None
Round Cables: None

Looks like I'll have to go back to VIA and go for the ASUS.
ASUS A8V or ABIT AV8......hmm...

I went back to asus a8v and got 5130 marks! Can someone explain to me why MSI Neo 2 is supposed to be one of the best 939 boards? I couldn't even get the thing stable at stock speeds. I guess I just don't get these reviews by Anandtech.

Anandtech has 'hand picked' processors, MBs and RAM PERIOD. What would it look like if a company's product crapped AT THE MOMENT it was being directly compared to another company's product? Trust me anything Crucial;) or MSI gives Anandtech will have been test thoroughly before given to Anandtech.

We're just the peons that believe all the hype.

Have to add my $0.02 here:

My system, listed below, was very simple to set-up and has functioned flawlessly since day one and still does.I've noted many posts of problems regarding this MB,but I'm left to wonder if I just got really lucky with my board or just a selected few got unlucky and those are the majority of the posts I'm seeing, since thos without issues gerneraly won't post.
One thing I do know for sure is that quite a few of those "bad" posts dealt with misconfiguration issues, wether they were hardware or software settings.
As I said, mine was like plug & play with a few exceptions of bio's settings and paying attention to little things like using SATA 3 & 4 for single drive(no RAID drivers needed) & using side-by-side 1&2 or 3&4 memory slots to obtain dual channel memory mode and turing off fastwrites(FW) in bios and manually entering memory timings etc.
Having done my homework prior to build paid off and my system was an easy build.
Also carefully choosing my hardware components helped a lot.
One thing though is that I don't overclock and I suspect that helps a whole lot also.I find overclocking needlessly stressing components, shortening their lifespan, adding heat & noise to the entire set-up and adding to the problem list of troubleshooting things when the time comes. All for a negligable increase in performance?! No thank you.
My system performs good enough as it is and I can say it has been reliable sofar. My memory runs at it's stock specified timings of 2-2-2-5-1T,hardrive runs just like it should and so does everything else in my system. And temperatures are rather good since I added aftermarket coolers on CPU & VGA card (Zalman 7000A AlCu & NV Silencer5 both with AS5 paste)
I haven't had any hiccups even from the start and my rating of this board would be the same as Anandtech reviewed it.Simple as that.
I think most of the problems are due to misconfiguration of hardware and bio's settings and those that are overclocking.
As far as I'm concerned overclockers have no room to complain when their systems are crapping out period or can't attain the performance they are aiming for.If components run fine at stock settings then it's performing as it should and as the factory states it will.Anything beyond that is wishful on the overclockers part and should not be taken into consideration when reviewing or rating a specific component.
One other thing I forgot to mention is the bios upgrades needed to run Winchester core socket 939 CPU's.
Another needless negative gig from some of the posts I've seen.Yes,there are plenty of Neo2's out there still with older bios' that won't support the Winchester right out of the box,but will with a bio's upgrade.
Unfortunately if you can't boot up and it's your only sytem you're SOL on this issue uneless you use a Newcastle core CPU to boot up,install and then DL the updated bios or send in the board to have bios flashed.
That's why it's important to do your homework prior to assembling a list of components when you're building a new system and not just run out and buy just any components you think might work or on the basis of appearance i.e flashy disco lights and cables etc.
Anyways the MSI K8N Neo2 get's an OK rating from me.Why not a great rating you ask?Well that's simple. This board required a lot of prior knowledge of configuration and careful component selection to make it all work in harmony.More so than most other MB's Ive had in the past.
But I also think it get's a little too much negative exploitation for the above stated reasons.
Had DFI come out with the Socket 939 LanParty Ultra board they unveiled back in June of this year,I probably would have chosen that one instead of the MSI simply because I've never been an MSI fan and always regarded their products as subpar compared to say ASUS & Abit. Now DFI(who has come a long way and is rapidly reaching the top 3 tier pedestals - if not already)
One last thing.I think MSI's product quality control and customer support leave a lot to be desired, but all in all this MB cannot be rated "the worst of all time",not by a long shot.I've had far worse boards than this.

For what it's worth, I thought I'd post a follow-up here. That benchmark I ran on 3dMark05, which gave me a score of 3910, was run with my Gigabyte 6800GT (GV-N68T256DH). This card had an overheating problem and I returned it last week. I purchased and installed a BFG 6800GT and now my 3dMark05 score is 4630. This indicates that the benchmark was not held back by the board so much as the video card I was running. This board is still working just fine with no problems, although no overclocking has been attempted.

One note: CoreCenter sucks. It consistently reports my CPU temp to be 4C more than what's reported by the BIOS. It also misreports system voltages. I would recommend anyone who wants to overclock with this board to make all your settings through BIOS, not this app.
