MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. + AMD 64 3500+ temps?

Hi,

I have just installed an AMD 64 3500+ CPU (Newcastle) in a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum board. I use the stock cooler (AMD boxed) and the stock thermal compound (already on the cooler).

I am a bit concerned about the temperature readings that I get from the MB (MSI CoreCenter). Idle temp. is around 47 deg celcius, while temp. at load full load tops at 57 deg. celcius (using the Hot CPU diagnostics). Board temp is about 19 deg. celcius.

I have also checked the readings in the BIOS. Here the temps seems to be in conformance with the above (board 19 deg C / CPU idle 45 deg C).

I am thinking about reseating the heatsink and maybe changing to ArticSilver 5. However, I would first like to check the above temps. with you guys - just to be sure its worth the effort.

By the way... the HS is not hot. It feels slightly warm (max 35-40 deg C).

Best regards

I am already using the new BIOS ver. 1.2.

Question is: what are the "normal" idle and load temps for a 3500+ in the K8N Neo2?

Anyone with a similar config?

Best regards

I just received my NewEgg shipment last night. After spending several hours getting it all setup, I got it booted and it, too, was reporting idle temps of 55C.

It shipped with the 1.1 BIOS. I then flashed it up to 1.2, and the temps dropped to idle of 44C. I'm still not happy with that temp, as I'd like to see it down in the 30's.

Here's my spex :

MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
Thermalright SLK-948U HSF
Vantec Tornado td9238H 92mm fan (LOUD)
1GB Crucial Ballistix Memory PC3200
PNY Verto 6800 Ultra
420Watt Raidmax PSU

I followed all possible instructions to the T and I'm not too happy with how hot it's running... The case has got 6 fans in it, plus the very very loud Tornado fan.

I've got everything set to auto... but I'd like to start tweaking my settings...

I'm looking around for other worthwhile threads, but can anybody suggest some good reading on how to tweak this thing?

Thanks!

I've got the same mobo (love the mobo by the way), but I have the 3800+. Mine were a little high (around 55 degrees, load) as well with the stock "goo." I bought some Arctic Silver 5, cleaned the heat sink and the cpu with a little rubbing alcohol, applied the AS5...and cha ching!!!! temps dropped like a rock. I've been at about 29 degrees (idle) to 41-44 degrees (load) ever since. It's really given me a big boost on my ocing.

I have this mobo with a 3800+ and my temps were really high with the 1.1 bios....but when i upgraded to 1.2 everything was normal.

I followed the Arctic Silver 5 instructions on the website... applied right at about a BB size right in the middle of the CPU... applied the HSF, and screwed the puppy down...

I guess maybe I should try to reseat it... but I thought I did it all right to begin with... :/

For the two days that my rig actually worked before the mobo died (not bitter at all) my temps were in the range of 45 degrees celcius. I never checked during "load" because i didn't install any games. I did encode a full length movie over night, but never checked the temps.

See my sig for the specs

When i get a functioning motherboard back from NewEgg I may be able to provide more feedback, but by then, this will probably be old news ...

My rig is back up. Idle temps are in the 43-45 C range. Load can get into the high 50's. I'm still running bios 1.1 tho.

My thermaltake cooler might not be the best, but it should be better than stock. And i'm using arctic silver 5. We'll see what happens after the bios update (still waiting to get a flopply drive in the mail).

I have just reseated the CPU with some AS5. I also changed the stock HS for a ThermalTake Seilent Boost K8. Idle temp is between 38 and 45 deg. C - full load is up to 62 deg C (Torture test of Prime95).

My idle temp fluctuates quite a bit between reboots. Its sometimes at 37-38 and sometime it stays up at 45. I looks to have something to do with whether the MOBO is cold or warm booted. Temp is higher if I switch the MOBO on from a long resting period.

BIOS is 1.2

By the way... is it safe to replace the active cooling of the NB with a passive heatsink? I am a bit tired of all the fan noise.

Best regards

Jakob

I'm using arctic silver 5, but i guess used it the wrong way as i did not remove the original compound that came witht eh stock cooler of the a64. i get idle 42 celsius and hot 48 (running Prime95) but my case is open. If I close it, temps get some 7 celsius more. will try removing the compound with alcohol and reapplying AS5.

Hi all 😀

I built a PC for my sis with the the same mobo (updated bios version and all) and i used a TT Volcano for it (quite old but i love it). I sanded the base down to a smooth finish and the idle temp is abot 30 - 32 🙂 Smashing!!!

Bye
