OK, I'm about to scream here
I purchased this motherboard back around Thanksgiving last year. It worked until around March and died (no power, nothing). I sent it for RMA and got another one and had nothing but problems. It would load windows, but I kept getting errors from the video card (Radeon 9800 Pro). It kept telling me that the VPU had been reset. So, I figured it was a bad video card, right?
Well, I couldn't get a new video card right away, so it sat on the back burner for several months before I got a chance to fiddle with it again. I tried a couple PCI video cards from work, and an older Geforce2 AGP card. Windows would load but would freeze. The system would even freeze up just sitting in the BIOS screen.
So, another RMA number is generated and another motherboard has now been placed in my case (Antec Sonata). I installed everything and it won't boot I get a periodic long beep and the LED indicators show "Initializing Keyboard Controller" according to the MSI basic troubleshooting document. OK, back to the basics. I pull everything out except CPU and memory (no video card even), try to boot and get the same thing. To me that means that the motherboard can't pick up the video card, even though I've tried both AGP and PCI cards. I reset the CMOS with no effect.
With the new motherboard I have also tried different memory, video, and power supplies (all borrowed from a co-worker).
Should I just give up and pick up a new motherboard? This is a socket 754 Athlon 64 processor, and I don't have money to upgrade to a new processor/motherboard/video card combo Anyone got any recommendations on a good Socket 754 motherboard, or maybe some extra advice on figuring out the problem with this motherboard?
