MSI K8N Neo Platinum

Hello, all.

I'm working on the parts list for a computer to be assembled by the end of the month. I was very interested in the K8N Neo Platinum until I read at newegg that it only supports the Athlon 64 3400+ and higher processors. MSI's website confirms this. Is this just marketing hoo-ha to steer people toward more expensive procs, or is this for real? If it's for real I'm pretty disappointed. $150 for a high-end mobo I can swallow, but I'm not prepared to shell out $400 for a processor when taking one or two steps back will save me $130-$180.

Thanks much for the help!

M

Oh, one more question. Should I put the Chaintech VNF3-250 at the top of my list if the MSI mobo won't support a slower proc?

Don't buy an MSI. They just got sued because of selling faulty products. I have personally had two MSI motherboards go south on me. Beware.

Chaintech is another cheap brand. Why don't you just pony up the massive $10 required to get an Asus or an Abit? You won't be sorry; they are superior products.

SB,

While I appreciate your warning re: problems with MSI's reliability, I find both your attempt at humor and your implication that I'm cheap pretty lame. I based my mobo picks on good marks scored by the MSI and Chaintech in a recent review at AT. Are AT's reviews not generally thought to be reliable?

Link? I don't see anything about this. In fact anads review of this board uses a 3200+ for it.

I do agree not to buy MSI products, I have had several bad experiences, but many have had good experiences, so I suppose it is, as always, the luck of the draw. Anyway, I would probably steer towards one of the K8T800 Pro or nForce3 250GB boards, opposed to the Chaintech, whiches uses the nForce3 250 chipset and then others chips to handle things like LAN, SATA, etc. Go to zipzoomfly.com and look at their selection of Athlon 64 boards, they have a good selection of boards, and maybe you can get some more ideas. As for the 3200+ support, I don't see why it would only support the 3400+ and higher, maybe it reads something like support for Athlon64 3400+ and higher, which means it does support the 3200+, but also faster processors.

Good Luck and Welcome to AT! 😀

I don't know why it wouldn't allow the 2800, 3000, or 3200, that would be rediculous. Not like I have any evidence to prove either way though :\

I wasn't trying to insult you or be humourous. I was simply pointing out that there is not a large price delta between the cheap and expensive motherboard brands. I apologize if I offended you, none was meant.
