Hi I have a MSI K8N NEo 2 platinum MB with an Athlon 64 3000 + venice Core .

When I bought this System 1 month Ago , After installing It I had some problems to Turn the PC on, the Problem with the BLACK Screen , So I changed some Rams And everything worked Fine. But from time to time I have some FREEZE ( I have to restart in order to fix it ) and they don't have a certain Pattern, they come Randomly, While Playing Video Games ... Surfing the Net .. sometimes Directly on the Startup of Windows.

It's Not a CPU Temps problems I monitored those and they reach 56-57 under load, So I guess it's a problem related to the MB itself. Any Idea on how to find the Exact problem ?

PS: I have the Bios V 1.5 and this freeze occurs more often when I Plug a USB Stick ( Ipod...) or When i Take out my Sound blasters Plug to put My headphones. So In general when i Stick something in the MB ... I dunno if that Helps.

Thank you

I have the same board with a 3200 winchester core CPU. I dont have any problems.

I have read on these forums about issues with the USB on this motherboard. Try searching this forum for the answers. Maybe you need to update the bios, but search first because I think I read people had issues with that.

You really need to update your BIOS.

1.5 is like 4 versions old, and is much older than the Venice core, so it does not support it.

Re-consider your RAM. I have had problems with Athlon64, and research, testing, and replacing of the RAM finally got those things fixed. Good Luck!

My machine used to simply freeze randomly.

I ended up finding out that I had used RAM slots 1 and 2 instead of (1 and 3) or (2 and 4 )as I should have.

Let me know if it works

Update your BIOS. There is a version that specifically deals with a USB issue, but just get the newest version and you're all set.

If your Nvidia MAC stops working after you update your BIOS, check this thread:

Do you realize that running Slots 1 & 3 and Slots 2 & 4 DO NOT GIVE YOU DUAL CHANNEL? To run DC a K8N Neo2 (and all MSI NF4 boards as well) need to run Slots 1 & 2 or Slots 3 & 4. Why is this so hard for people to understand? The slots are even color coded in an idiot-proof arrangement. The manual clearly states which slots should be used for SC and DC configuration.

While is has been shown that DC usually only gives users about 3-5% performance increase, why would anyone run single-channel when their S939 CPU supports dual-channel?

:) Thank you for all the Answers, I'll GO with Updating the BIOS, because the Ram solution i've did I tried several Ram sticks and I have it in SC Slot 1 & 3 . I never Flashed any BIOS so I wanted to know if Flashing the BIOS also means ( Re-installing Windows etc... ) And do you recommand a Manual Flash or the LIVE update 3 utility from MSI ?

you don't need to re-install windows. when you first boot, it MIGHT say new system ____ detected (system bus, ACPI). It never has for me, but it used to on a nforce 2 board i had. If you've never flashed a BIOS before, I would recommend the live update. A lot of people here will tell you not to do a BIOS flash in windows, but if it was SOOO dangerous, then I don't think any motherboard company would recommend it themselves due to RMAs and such. The first time I did it I was nervous, but then, when it was done, I felt soo relaxed ;)

IF anything goes wrong, you will have to contact MSI and I think what they do is send you a BIOS chip so you just pop your bad one out and pop the good one in. As long as your computer doesn't lose power while you're flashing it, it should be alright. Doesn't take very long either, just a couple of minutes

I just received MSI K8N Neo2-F MB with BIOS 1.9. I installed XP Pro and used MSI's auto update to install new BIOS (v. 1.B) through Windows. System would not reboot. Partition with OS was gone. I had to reinstall XP Pro all over again. System seems fine now, but I will never use auto update in Windows again. I'm just glad my data was on a different physical drive. BTW, I have AMD Athlon 64 bit 3500+ CPU, not overclocked (yet).
