How many of you have one of these boards and what is your take on it? Is it worth the extra $$ to get this over an ECS K7S5A?

I went from the msi amd 760 board to the epox amd 760 board to this board and I stuck with this one. The board has all of the options you could need plus msi extras. The kt266a chipset is very stable and reliable in my opinion.

It really depends, if you need the extra features, then it's worth it. MSI's overclocking is far superior to any ECS board, their quality is also much better. In fact I wouldn't take the K7S5A over any KT266A either way. There is also a much better board than the K7S5A if you're not looking for a lot of extra, and that would be the Shuttle AK31. If you need more connectivity, like more IDE ports, and USB2.0 etc. the MSI would be the way to go.

Both of those boards are unreliable, so no. It'd be worth it for the performance, possibly.

How about that for a wild claim? The least you could do is provide an explaination... *shakes head*

I have been using the MSI board for over two months and found it to be easy to setup and very stable. It is also easy to update the BIOS and drivers via their website. I do not have any experience with the ECS product

My K7T266 Pro2 RU has been perfectly stable. The only annoyance that I ever had with it was when they didn't have a way to shut off the CPU fan warning in the BIOS. If you didn't have your fan plugged into the header on the mobo, then an annoying warning would go off when you started your PC. This has been fixed though with a BIOS update.

MSI have been the best when it comes to stability for AMD platforms. They use oversized transistors to ensure proper power flow, IMO their the best way to go if your building an AMD comp, and the red PCB is a sweet extra.

Lets see now. I've seen you bash the Epox 8kha+, the Abit 266a, now the MSI 266a and the ECS K7S5A. Care to put down a few more good boards?

When newbie's ask for advice, your the kinda guy who turns their threads into flame wars.

What do you like? :)

The only reason you could say the MSI is unreliable is because MSI had a bad run of them back in Nov/Dec 2000. Almost everyone who bought a K7T series board back then had it die in 6-8 months (including me). I think they have since corrected the problem.

ECS has given many members of this forum head aches, including me. I lost two K7S5As, neither of them worked (see thread "My ECS Experience" in motherboards forum). As for MSI, while they're usually good, they have been known to fail inexplicably after a few months of use.

I don't really care about overclocking, what i'm looking for is something that will give me no hastles and a manufacturer that has good support. Is the MSI significantly faster than the ECS?

Ok, why don't do a poll and see how many post-K7T Pro2A MSI owners have had their boards fail on them?

The KT266A chipset is inherently faster than ECS's SiS735 chipset. So it's safe to say that the MSI is faster than the ECS, though not by a huge margin. Personally I've been happy with the way MSI has supported their customers, BIOS updates has always been there, and they're very easy to setup. ECS's reliability is very questionable, I wouldn't venture into that route.

I've had my MSI K7T266 Pro2 running since October, 24/7. No problems at all.

Cheers,

I have had the k7t266 pro2 along with 3 other guys in my clan. We all bought them from newegg in Nov, and we have yet to have any problems whatsoever. Its idiots like you that spout off rumors that make people think that. I can't speak for the ecs as i have yet to own one.

I've had my MSI pro2 up and running since christmas and it's been perfectly stable. Don't listen to what davonex says. He can't back up his claim that the MSI is unreliable. If I was in your shoes I'd definately go with the MSI. It's so purrty! Good luck!

i have the ECS K7S5A... pretty happy with it for the most part. There are a couple quirks with the board design and bios... but it's a good, cheap, solid, reliable board.

That being said, I don't think I'd really recommend the ECS to anyone. It's not a very user-friendly board, and unless you're REALLY tight on cash, there are better options out there... someone mentioned the Shuttle AK31 and i think that is a very good choice.

Get the MSI.
