I had been having problems with my Guillemot Muse Sound card (card worked/sounded fine, but microphone refused to function). So out of curiousity I uninstalled that card, took it out of the system and used the onboard sound and mike with no problems. Thinking there might be a conflict, I tried disabling the onboard sound in bios and uninstalling the drivers. The problem is that everytime I turn on the computer it gives me the "found new hardware" message and asks to install the drivers for onboard sound, although the sound is disabled in Bios! This message pops up everytime on turn on the system, until I install the drivers. Right now I am listening to an mp3 with the onboard sound, with sound disabled in bios... Any suggestions?

Here is a link to the other thread when I thought the problem was the soundcard:

Well, I have removed the onboard sound drivers from Windows, if that is what you mean. But then everytime I start my computer it asks to reinstall them. Even though I hit cancel everytime, next time I restart it asks to re-install them...

No, what I mean is diable the onboard sound from within windows. If you go to Control Panel-->System-->2nd Tab, find anything that has to do with the onboard sound and disable it from there. You do that by viewing the properties of the offending item and checking "Disable this item in this hardware profile". Then reboot. I know these directions suck, but I'm currently at work and NT is the only thing they use here. So I can't exactly walk you through. Once I get home, I'll give you better instructions.

Thanks, Jaylek55. I understand what you mean and disabled the sound. Next, I'll install the Muse soundcard/drivers and see what the results are. Just can't figure out why the mike refuses to record while using that card (you can hear it over the speakers fine, but windows does not seem to understand it's there...) I basically just wanted to make sure the system would work ok with a soundcard before I pop for a SB Live.

At any rate, thanks again! I appreciate it.

gmccall, there are two places in the bios to disable. Have you disabled them in both places? One disables the onboard sound, the other disables the dos legacy support. Make sure you have disabled both. I have this board and a SB Live Platinum 5.1. It works perfectly.
