audio is AC97 of i'm not mistaken.
there is no onboard video

I just wanted to know if I could plug a monitor in and plug in speakers straight into the motherboard.

I'm building a computer for a friend of mine and she only wants the basic features. I just wanted to know if I needed to get her a graphics card and/or a sound card.

No, you do not have to buy a separate sound card.

Yes, you have to buy a sepatate video card.

One more question...does the graphics card have to be agp or pci or does it not matter?

well, both would work, but AGP is the way to go
