I built a MSI K7T Pro2-A without any problems except I can't get the OnBoard Sound to work. I am running Win2k SP1. I tried updated to the lastet BIOS(i think - k7tpro2av25.exe) I have the OnBoard Sound Enabled in the BIOS and the legacy audio also enabled. I have tried downloading the AC97 drivers from VIA, but I cannot install those b/c the program tells me that I need to enable the OnBoard Sound. I have tried installing it manually thru the Add/Remove hardware, but no luck.

Did you swap out motherboards without doing a fresh install of Win2K?? I built a system for a friend of mine with K7T-Pro2A. Ended up having to do a fresh install of Win98SE because it was giving me same error yours is giving with Win2K. After fresh install, the VIA Audio drivers installed without a hitch.....

Have you tried the 4-1 drivers? I think you will have to install those before the onboard sound driver, but when installing the drivers following the cd you will also get into trouble (or you might get in trouble). you will get a high pitched noice, and you will have to reboot the system. I think this driver work : 108 via sound driver. It did work for others in winme, and those who have tried in win 2000. I have to warn you about the size of the file (19 mb)

The problem is that Windows 98/2000 does not even detect the OnBoard Sound...I installed the 4 in 1 drivers 1st. I got the VIA Audio thing, but still no luck.

Strange... But don't wait for windows to find the hardware, is there a way to install the software, and let that find the hardware?

you did enable onboard sound in the bios? did you enable the soundblaster emulation, mpu 401?
Im not completely sure how it works in 2000

I have this board, the onboard sound works perfectly in WindowsME. Windows detected it fine. But... when I put a soundcard in (and remove the onboard from windows and bios) I get horrid sound in games and mp3s. I went back to the onboard sound. (Was 2 cards, a vortex2 and a pci128. Same provlems.)

Did you enable it in both parts of the bios? There are 2 areas I think you need to turn on.

I am having the same problems it seems. I just installed a MSI K7T Pro 2-A motherboard and I cannot get the onboard sound to detect at all within WindowsME. I even just performed a fresh install on a separate partition and got the same results. I see nothing in the DOS-text boot-up screens nor anything within Windows.

In the BIOS I set the On-Chip Audio to AUTO. Isn't that all I have to do? I even played with the Legacy sound and no help.

Someone please help me!

I have a very similar problem. I just built a new system with a MSI K7T Pro2-A board, AMD Athlon T-bird 850, Win2K. I'm using the onboard Audio. It works fine in Windows but if I load a 3D game it works fine for a while (usually 10-15 mins) and then the whole system freezes. I know it's the audio card because if I disable it in the Device Manager and play the same game (without sound) it will run for hours. I've seen similar reports around various news groups, but so far no solution that seems to work for more than one person. Anyone have any ideas?

you guys w2k won't find it under sound devices. Look under "other devices" in device manager and see if there is a pci sound/multimedia controller device or something like that. If there is then that is your onboard sound. You have to click on that the properties and upgrade driver then point to where the sound drivers are located on your hard drive and that should work.

go to www.viahardware.com to get the latest sound drivers.

also i don't want to make anyone feel dumb but make sure you have the speakers plugged into the right spot on the back.

I have the Pro 2, and my drivers did not work until I carefully followed the installation & ORDER of the sound program/driver that came on the CD.

The main problem with this onboard sound is that this is software driving and it doesn't have an actual dedicated soundchip (as in hardware vs. software) onboard. This means it is totally dependent and can exhibit some serious problems in performance since anything can interfere with the software. My solution has been to get an actual soundcard, no problems after that :)...

FYI, I got the on-board sound working. I uninstalled the VIA 1.20A Drivers and instead installed the 1.08 PCI VIA Sound Drivers. Since then I haven't had the lockup problem.

Yes you can disable the onboard sound. I'm using a Soundblaster Live X-Gamer 5.1 with this board without any problems. The turbo implements the KT133A chipset and officially supports the 133MHz FSB and also has a Promise IDE RAID controller whereas the pro2-a implements the KT133 chipset without the RAID controller.
