MSI K7T Pro2-A and Nvidia GeForce Conflict

I'm having problems with my new K7T Pro2-A and my GeForce 2 MX. I'm running Det 3 6.31. Whenever I try increasing my resolution beyond the base 640x480, I get a completely unusable, flickering screen. And when I switched my Colors to 16-bit from 256 the screen turned black and I believe my system crashed. I recall similar problems with the Asus A7V and Nvidia, and a general problem with VIA based mobos. I disabled AGP 4x in the BIOS, but this doesn't help. I also flashed to the latest BIOS. What other settings must I change, or what drivers should I revert to in order to get higher resolutions and increase my color depth. Thanks!

I installed the 4.27 beta. The system was giving me problems with 4.27 beta installed.

Ok thanks! Can I just install right over, or do I need to uninstall drivers first?

Have you tried disabling AGP Fast-Write? I personally have no probelms with the set-up but I have heard that you have to disable some things in the BIOS to make it stable.

I was looking for a setting in the BIOS that mentions AGP fast writes. I couldn't find anything worded exactly like this. I did find a setting for "AGP Master 1 WS Write" and "AGP Master 1 WS Read". Do these help? I'm going to install 4.25 and then see if that helps first.

I installed the 4.25 drivers, no luck. This is annoying. Did I mention I'm on Win2k?

What about the detonators? Try to find fast writes and disable it.

6.31s are official, I just downloaded them from nVidia's site. I could try an older version, or possibly the vendor's driver (Hercules). Is there any setting which I should look for that is the equivalent of AGP fast-writes?

You should be able to get them to work together,my own MSI K7T PRO & Geforce2 MX have no problems with AGP 4x or any games infact rock solid btw I`m using Win98 os1,make sure you also have the latest monitor drivers, disable all video shadowing in Bios, the drivers I use are 6.31 detonators with Via 4.25a drivers.Btw did you do a clean install of OS?I recommend you do.

Forgot to say the AGP Master 1 WS Write and AGP Master 1 WS Read you mention I`ve enabled infact I`ve my bios tweaked from Orangedelta .

I have a feeling it's my monitor. Don't laugh, but I'm using an old 14" monitor right now; I probably should have mentioned this. An old monitor may have compatibility issues with a newer video system, correct? Could it be something with the refresh rate?

I am now able to change color depth at least, but this is the least of my problems.

Yes, try borrowing a monitor to see if that fixes your problem. I have seen many 14" monitors that don't like 800x600 as well. :)

Thanks John, I'll try that out. One thing that makes me concerned is that I was able to set the display to higher resolutions on a PCI based graphics card that I tried out before on this computer. Does this mean that if my Geforce MX doesn't run on this monitor that it won't run altogether on higher resolutions, or should I take it case by case?

My own Sparkle Geforce2 MX will go up to 2048x1536,but my monitor 19" will do only 1600x1200 so you see the Monitor size is the first thing that restricts resolution of course you have to take 2D quality in to the equation as well at very high res, that` why I use 1024 or 1280 resolution.

i think its a refresh rate problem. You said you get a flickering screen once u hit above 640? I think your old 14incher can't handle it, i would say try a diff monitor if you can, see if that works.

Good luck!!!

I have a Prophet 2 MX on my MSI board. I run Bios 1.9 and 4in1 4.25. Mine also crashed when I first installed. The fix was a format and install the 4in1's FIRST before anything else.

Then again I had nothing to loose by formatting since I just installed anyways.

Hope this helps.

Oh boy, you are having very similar problems to those I had last week. I have an A7V and a GeForce2 GTS and I was having so much trouble. I eventually got it working, and I love it. Here is what I had to do: Take out your GeFroce card and put in something else, for me it was my TNT. Then I flashed my bios with the 1004rev, that is the latest one on the asus website. Then download the newest Via 4-in-1 drivers and the latest AGP drivers. Install both, reboot so windows can set up the current drivers, then put in your new video card again and you should be all set to go.
good luck,
-doug
