I have a MSI K7T Pro-2A here and I can't get the onboard sound to work. Its my friends board and I tried convincing him that a SB Live would be a better solution but he wants to use the onboard sound (hard headed :(). Anyhow, Windows sees the onboard sound controller but doesn't have drivers for it. Which one of the sound drivers on MSI's cd do I install? Also, I deleted the sound entries in system properties hoping that Windows would redetect them but it didn't! Am I missing something here? I have Onboard Audio in BIOS set to AUTO. Help me out here!

Check in system properties if windows have detected the sound chip. If so, then update the drivers from the cd (search for them in via audio folder (or something like that).
Anyway, whatever you do, DON'T INSTALL DIRECTX 8. It ruins the sound quality and there is no cure(except of formating the hard drive).
Check also if you have enabled something like soundblaster legend driver in BIOS.

Upon reformating, Windows 98se does detect the sound chips but says it can find "resources for it." Should I try to the VIA MVP4 drivers on the CD? Also, as stated in my previous post, if I delete the entries in system properties, Windows 98se will not redetected the sound chip. It only detects it after I reformat. Here is what I have in BIOS

Onboard Sound : AUTO
Legacy Audio (sp?) : Enabled

These are the only two entries in BIOS I can find that relate to onboard sound. Am I missing something else?

In order to get the audio to work you will have to either use the drivers on the cd or just download them from the website. Windows will not recognize it properly until the drivers are installed.

I used my onboard (ac97) sound when I first installed win2k to keep it simple and while not spectacular, it is a perfectly acceptable solution. I believe if you put your MSI CD it autostarts with installing the ac97 driver on the initial setup screen?

the manual with the mobo explains what drivers to load from the cd for the onboard sound

I just followed that to the letter, and it worked.

i have my speakers on DTS 7.1 surround sound. when i get my computer hooked up, will the onboard sound still sound really good on huge speakers like that?

i had a cable going from my SBlive to a sony receiver, then out to the 9 speakers and sub. on the motherboard, there is the same audio out port, so will the audio quality be degraded any because i wont be using a sound card? or should i plug it back in and use the SBlive? if i dont have to use the SBlive im not going to because every new component is a possibility for problems! =)

Thanks

MrDudeMan: Use you SB-live, If you're desperate, you can always take out the Sound Blaster.
