I am having problems with a k7n420 (nForce 1) motherboard and its onboard USB controller. The problem arises when unplugging a device from the port and plugging it back in. For example, I have tried installing two different scanners (one HP, and one Epson) through the onboard USB (not at the same time, but after the first one didn't work I returned it and got another scanner and it also had the same problems). Following the instructions, the scanner works great just after you install it. However, after you reboot the machine, or unplug the scanner and plug it back into the USB port, it no longer works and has a yellow (!) mark next to it in Device Manager. The only way to get it working is to reinstall the driver for the scanner which is a pain in the ass.
So with the above information, has anyone run across similar problems with an nForce motherboard, or a k7n420 in particular?
The complete system specs are:
MSI K7N420 nForce using onboard video
BIOS version 2.4
Using latest nForce unified drivers (started out using the MSI supplied drivers, upgraded to Nvidia's to no avail)
1x256 MB DIMM
Windows XP SP1 (started out plain XP, upgraded to SP1 to see if it fixed the problem but it didn't)
PS/2 Mouse
I'm aware of the obvious solutions (RMA the motherboard, or buy a PCI USB card) but I'm wondering if this is a known problem that can be fixed before I go either of these routes.
Any help is much appreciated.
