TOTAL W/ SHIPPING 746.11

Will the nforce be good w/ only 128megs? What can i substitute for cheaper stuff?

I will be using a ATI 7200 in this comp that i have in my 233 and i will be usin the old 4x cd-rw drive as the cd-rom in this comp. also i wont be needin a floppy (networks are useful)

will this make a nice lan box?

i hope my parents let me!!!

i'd ditch cordless for a lan.

the monitor is a heavy SOB to lug to lans just to let ya know 😉 very nice color tho. spring for 256MB if you can squeeze it in there... it'll be worth it.

dont worry im figurin that a 19" trini dell branded is a bit heavier than the 17" 700nf!!!!!

ok goin non cordless will also cut back on price since my dad says if i build it just get a good gpu for it instead of usin the 7200

256=maybe does anand still have the 15% off deal?

so should i go built in gpu or 7200? either way i will upgrade in the future slowly

oh and i forget what is the deal with nforce and 1,2,3 slots filled with memory? is one or 2 slots filled better?

nourdmrolNMT1- Just a couple of quick FYI's:

1. Yes, nForce performs best when using 2 sticks of RAM. When using 1 stick of RAM, the machine will work, just not quite as fast as with 2 sticks. For example, 2 256MB sticks of RAM would yield better performance than 1 512MB stick of RAM. The sweet spot right now seems to be 2 256MB sticks of RAM. This yields the best performance (dual-channels gets enabled) and you have a good amount of RAM. Of course, if your running low on funds, you could always just buy 1 stick of 256MB, and then drop in a second stick later when you have afford it.

2. From what I've seen in the benches, the on-board video isn't all that great compared to current add-in AGP video cards. The 7200 you have is most likely going to own on the built-in graphics of the nForce, especially if you only put in 1 stick of RAM (nForce's built-in video card shares bandwidth with system RAM).

As for cheap RAM, that's not a very good idea no matter what your building. It costs a whole $40 more for a 256MB stick instead of a 128MB stick at Crucial. Depending on where you are, a stick of Mushkin 256MB High Performance DDR SDRAM 222 wouldn't run you much more than that. Of course by then, your about $60 over what a single 128MB stick would cost so it's probably not worth it to you.

Are you ordering everything from one vendor?

Hope some of this helps!

Chuck

oh, you have a 19" now? heh. well then, if you don't mind it 😉

as for the video.. well, i say just use the onboard and see how it works for you. if it's enough for now, then just hold out, not like you can't save the money and buy something better down the line.
