A little FYI.
I just received my AGP MSI GF4 Ti4400 on Monday. I have several computers. The two "rigs" below, which I built, and a Retail Compaq 5430US.
I decided to put the new MSI video in my Compaq. It is a P4 1.8 Ghz w/512 DDR running WinXP Home.
The card hiccupped when installing it's packaged CD drivers. It came up w/the three different warning messages saying I was about to overwrite some files with files of a "different language" and the new files were not written in English?? I chose "do not overwrite" the original files.
Then after installation and a reboot. I attempted to run MSI's 3D Demo.. it opened up a neat looking plane cockpit sort of interface then proceeded to crash explorer. Hmmm, I tried a second time w/the same result.
Ok, MSI has given me a live update program. It goes right to the web and looks at your card's BIOS and Drivers. It tells you what you have and if upgrades are available. My Drivers were the newest "proven" release, but there was a BETA version available. My BIOS was up to date. So I updated the Drivers. No "wrong language" messages this time.
Ok, reboot. Run MSI's 3D Demo. Nice cockpit screen.... crash.... hmmm. Ok, maybe 3D Demo is bad. So I installed the game Auqunox or something like that. It came with the video card. It worked w/no problems. Looked really good. Later that night I played about 2 hours of TFC.... no problems.
Shut down for the night.
Day two, Tuesday. Turn on PC around 4:30. Looks fine. Play about 1/2 hour of Medal of Honor. Worked fine. Let computer idle for about 3 hours while I was out. Came back and went on to internet. Was "surfing" for about 45 mins. I started downloading some map files for TFC and all of a sudden......
Red static like spots all over screen?? move mouse, they get worse?? about 20 secs later.... LOCK UP HARD... PC just shuts off and reboots. Upon reboot, I get a WinXP message saying I just had a Fatal Error ( No Sh#t ), please send a report to Microsoft. It says the cause was my MSI ti4400 driver performing an illegal function call. This happened again in about 15 mins...
I figured maybe it was overheating. I opened case and pulled the card from the PCI slot right next to the MSI video card.... I pointed a fan at the card... Ok, reboot... 10 mins.. red static... crash... Please send report to Microsoft.
Ok, back to MSI's sight.. Download original "proven" drivers from MSI. I do that and while installing I get the "wrong language" message concerning several DLL files. This time I let them be overwritten. No change, 15 mins and crash.
I have since pulled the card and put my GF2 card back in.. System runs like a charm.
I bought this card from Essential Computer in NY.
www.essencompu.com I am going to call them and see what they have to say. I already e-mailed MSI and haven't received a response.
If you buy this card, it seems you need to keep your fingers crossed and hope you get one from the new batch.
