hey guys,

i have an msi e63 am2 htpc (win7) build im finishing up. have it hooked up to the tv via hdmi. have the optical toslink hooked up to the receiver but im getting no sound.

if i do hdmi stereo sound i can get that to work. but i cannot for the life of me get the digital sound to work.

i can see two realtek digital output options. i can run soundtests on them etc. one is marked digital output and the other is digital output (optical). i tried both as default and neither worked. i disabled the hdmi sound etc.

any ideas?

thanks.

I'm concerned that you can get audio to work when the HDMI is connected. Can you try connecting to the TV via VGA / DVI possibly and then test the audio? Or just connect to a computer monitor and then test the TOSLINK adapter. Taking HDMI out of the equation might make things easier because I suspect it may have something to do with that, like if HDMI is connected no other audio will work.

Well this could be either a hardware or software issue, or both.

I'm glad your using Win 7 since its the latest OS.

It could be that the Realtek audio hardware does not support both HDMI audio and TOSLINK audio at the same time. (even if HDMI is not default audio)

Windows 7 has the ability to specify the default audio device as you are aware, and you can switch between HDMI, SPDIF interface or analog speakers under 'Playback Devices'.

Now obviously if you are connected via HDMI and want to use TOSLINK / SPDIF digital out you must make sure that is the default and not HDMI.

The problem could be that if HDMI is connected it is the default in the AMD software and passes through all audio only through HDMI and not TOSLINK.

You need to have the latest ATI Catalyst drivers as well as latest Realtek drivers for onboard audio. This may be a bug you have to report on either MSI forums or even AMD motherboard forums.

I don't know if I can add anything more with actually having your motherboard.
