I need some advice. I was doing some online shopping in the middle of the night and failed to do my homework and ended up buying the MSI 975x Platinum v2 because I wanted something with Quad-Core support & 2 PATAs. For some reason I completely ignored the 650i chipset boards, thinking incorrectly that these were the 590 boards that don't overclock well. Anyway, now realizing that these are infact the new Nvidia chipset I'm beginning to feel buyers remorse.

The computer I'm building was going to be my primary PC at work. I like having the extra PATA ports because I clone disk to disk and have a bunch of PATA DVD-ROMs & Burners I would like to reuse. I also want to use RAID 1 with the SATA and heard that people are unable to use the jMicron controller if the Intel RAID is enabled. Has anyone confirmed this?

Anyway, I'm wondering if it's worth returning? I bought it at NewEgg and the shipment is still in the mail. They may or may not charge me restocking, however I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle. If worst comes to worst, I could always use it in my home PC build (currently using a laptop) because I don't need RAID and can buy another 650i board for work so there is always that option. However in my original upgrade path, I planned to work on the cheap and use either an ASROCK or ECS board w/ AGP to reuse my old 6800GT until I felt I needed to upgrade again. If I use it in my home PC, it just forces me to upgrade my video card sooner than I expected. Money wise, I can handle the extra cost, it's just that I like to keep as much money in my pocket as possible.

Oh, I'm also pairing the board with an e4300 from a Fry's combo. I ended up selling the board for $65 making the chip only $85. In terms of overclocking, I'm a modest overclocker and don't plan to overclock the e4300 above 1333 FSB unless it can go higher without a vmod.

For anyone who has the MSI 975x, could you tell me your experience. I wish I paied more attention to the NewEgg reviews. While most people are satisfied, less than 30% gave it 5 eggs.

It's an OK board, though I don't know too much about the overclocking potential. Forget about the 2nd PATA port, because it uses the jmicron chip. The jmicron chip is a SCSI chip and will not read drives correctly and force them into PIO mode. The best way to use this board is either entirely SATA or use the one PATA and SATA. Other than that the board works very well. That said, I like the 650i way better.
