MSI 865PE Neo2

Well I recieved a fried motherboard from my brothers girlfriends brother because it is supposedly fried. The motherboard still has the 2.8 ghz p4 in the socket and I would really like to know if there is anyway of saving or replacing it, seen as how right now I only have a 1.0ghz p3. Supposedly the motherboard was emitting a burnt smell after my brother got it but I was not around to inspect it. If it is the case of one of the caps breaking, how would it be possible to track down which one it is and how to replace it. This motherboard is actually probably not even half a year old and is located in the MSI box but the box does not have any ups code or anything located on it, would there be any possible way that MSI would accept this motherboard without any ups or receipt, just the motherboard itself and the box? From what I have heard, the motherboard is fried because he failed to ground himself when installing it. Thank you in advance for your responces.
