MSI 7800GTX + A8N SLI = board is not receiving enuf power?

So I finally put together my system and I get a boot message from the Nvidia control panel stating its not receving enough power on boot....

Before you ask I have a 480W power supply + 3HDDs and running with a 3800+ X2 and a DVD drive so I'm pretty sure I have more than enough power.

WTH I thought 7800s don't need a molex connector

...but it does use that black 6-pin power connector... if you don't have that on your PSU, your card should have come with an adaptor plug that takes 2 molex plugs into a single 6-pin connector.

Not real familiar with this exact Model, but I have the Premium, so there may be similarities.

First, do you have the 6 Pin Power Connected to your 7800 GTX ?

Also, do you have the 4 pin (like normal HD power) connector plugged into your MB by the Video Card. I believe it's called the EZ-Plug or EZ-Power or something like that ?

Thanks guys just saw the silly black conenctor on the GFX card now 🙂

Whats the HDD power connector on the mobo for?

That provides extra 12v power for the MB & Devices, including your Video Card.

I believe it's primarily to help support a second Video Card in SLI mode.

You don't ever need to connect anything to that 4-pin near the top PCI-E slot if you're not running SLI though...right? Or doesn't it hurt anything to do it anyway? I have an SLI Deluxe model, and I thought you weren't supposed to use it if you only had one vid card in.

I've got mine connected and I'm only running one card.

I see no reason it should cause any problems, the MB should only pull as much power as it needs. Sort of like having 26A vs 36A on your 12V Power Supply, just add's overhead for stability or 'spike' demands.

I wonder if that's the problem I was having with my 7800gtx before... I guess when I get my replacement from BFG RMA (instead of the 7800gt that they sent me on my last attempt), I will give that connector some power too, heh.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but my 12v readings in ASUSProbe don't ever budge. I get a very slight (one tick) on my other Voltages once in awhile, but the 12v never moves 🙂
