MSI 6585: Any experience with this SiS648-based board?

Curious to see if anyone has tried this new SiS648-based board from MSI. Anandtech.com had a review of it a while back. Review was OK. Some issue they couldn't get over running DDR333 in "Fast" mode, though it ran ok otherwise. I think this meant they ran it as CAS2. Ran OK at DDR400, according to the review.

I'm thinking about getting it, given that there have been a lot of negative reports on the Asus P4S8X.

Any experiences/comments out there?

Well, besides MSI's SiS 648 board, there's the SiS 648-based Gigabyte 8SG667, ABIT SR7-8X, or the Shuttle AK45GTR. If I had to choose, I'd go with the 8SG667; great DDR400 performance and compatibility, some good features here and there, and priced well at under $100.

There's still a few more intriguing SiS 648 boards left over at our labs that we haven't released reviews of yet, so you just may want to hold out. :)

Thanks for the response...and the teaser, Evan. ;) Any hints on 1) timing of forthcoming reviews, and 2) which manufacturers' stuff you have? Don't see any others on the market now other than Abit, Asus, Shuttle, MSI, and Gigabyte.

I've been "holding out" for weeks and only the fact that my Abit BG7 failed on me (since RMA'ed) has put me in a position to reconsider motherboards and get a new one. I've ruled out the Abit, Shuttle, and Asus boards based on stability issues reported so far, though the Asus' features (particularly FireWire) had me thinking twice. Gigabyte board is out of stock at most places at the moment, but perhaps I can wait...

Other than your review, I just haven't seen much on the MSI board. I have to admit to hoping that I don't experience your review's problem with the "Fast" setting. I assume this means I can't run at CL2.0.

The last of my KT400 reviews will be released by the end of next week.

As for as the "Fast" setting I was not able to run with the MSI board, this does not refer to CL (CAS Latency), it refers to the memory "timing mode". "Timing modes" include Normal, Fast, Turbo, and Ultra. It's just something that's supposed to speed up your RAM, but it didn't in the MSI boards' case.

You can read a lot of "issues" with the ASUS P4S8X SIS648 board on here. BOIS updates in the future may help the performance. I almost ordered a Gigabyte 8SG667 the other day, but now they're sold out. Should tell you something.
