MSI 635 laptop/ ATI Powerplay problem

I recently purchased an MSI 635 notebook. It uses an ati mobility x700 gpu. The problem occurs when I use ATi's official mobility catalyst 6.1 drivers, and only when powerplay is enabled. When the notebook is running off battery power, the only way I can describe it is that windows no longer draws or redraws the screen, making it impossible to do anything but shutdown. This doesn't occur when I use the drivers from MSI's website; the only problem is that they're somewhat outdated, having been released in the middle of 2005. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
