MSI 5570 fan stuck at high setting; can't change

I have this card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127546

Running on: Abit IP35-PRO, Q6600, Win7-x64, HX620 PSU.

I'm using the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI/AMD's site (11.3); the full package that includes Catalyst Control Center. I figured out that the loud noise my PC is making is coming from the GPU fan on the 5570. CCC has sliders and settings to control the fan but they don't do anything -- 20% and 100% and the fan noise level doesn't change.

I downloaded MSI Overdrive and that didn't work either. It reports the fan as hovering between 15 and 20% speed, but the actual sound level of the fan never changes. the GPU temp is consistently around 36C (reported by CCC and Afterburner).

What gives? What can I do to reduce this fan's noise? Everything else in my PC is pretty quiet.

Or, is there a fan I can get to replace the stock one? I'm not sure what size it is.

I figure I can maybe plug in a 3rd party one to one of the "AUX Fan" connectors on my IP35-Pro mobo, and hopefully control the speed via the BIOS. just realized that probably won't work that well since I don't know how well the mobo will throttle the speed.

Is there a fan with a built in regulator or something that allows voltage control? I'm fine with a quiet setting that runs at a static speed 24/7. I don't do any 3d gaming, just 2d work with some video watching like netflix or flash based video.

The solution to all your noise problems:

a card without a fan on it,... so 0 db of noise from it:

14-131-300-Z03

PowerColor SCS3 AX5750 1GBD5.

Card above is more than twice as fast (like if your getting 30 fps in games now, this guy will give you 60+ fps).

it costs 89$ after MIR.

Or just a new 5570 with a passive heatsink:

65$.

If you're trying to control the fan speed through CCC, you may also have to tick the Enable AMD Overdrive box before it will work.

If it still won't work, you're probably out of luck. Unfortunately some manufacturers still make cards that don't support changing the fan speed. In that case, you're looking at changing the cooler on the graphics card, or buying a quieter card. I'm not sure if they do replacement coolers for low-end cards like yours :(

I don't want a new card, I just got this one. I should have done research, but I could have sworn I read that the 5570 was quiet and that the fan was adjustable. I'm not sure if I misread, or if that only applies to 5570 from other manufacturers (mine is an MSI).

Can I just do a hack job and run the fan on 5V? Or is there some kind of pre-built voltage regulator that will allow me to adjust the voltage and therefore the speed of the fan?

Yeah enabling Overdrive doesn't work. On top of that, any time that box is checked, I get weird artifacts on my 2405fpw display. It's like this weird thin bar across the screen that appears briefly in a quick flicker, as it moves from top to bottom over and over.

Solved!

I just switched the 12v and 5v wires on a molex connector I cannibalized from another fan, and jerry-rigged it to the GPU's fan. That way the video card and it's stock cooler stay stock. I got everything to stay together with tape. The GPU temp is staying at 36C so far, and the computer is back to original noise level.

Nice ghetto result. Hopefully the card remains fairly cool. A low-end GPU shouldn't heat up too much under stress with reasonable air-flow through the case.
