if the pics on newegg show the card in its actuality, the vrms look like they're completely left bare (no heatsinks and certainly no fan on them), which could be holding you back.

use GPU-Z (http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/) to monitor your temps while playing games, most importantly your VDDC temps.

vrms? voltage root mean squared? or is it voltage regulating something?

Anyways, I've been able to run my MSI 4830 at 810MHz core with hardware volt mod and it's fine/stable (with stock cooling). I don't use CCC and used ATI Tray Tools for overclocking.

I imagine the 4850 runs hotter than the 4830 and the heatsink/fan MSI put on it (which seems to be the same cooler but different color) might not be adequate enough for overclocking. I tried increasing voltage on my 4830 and increasing core clockspeed, but when I run Furmark, even though it's ok at first, the gpu locks up once temps go past 80C.

OP should first understand that every card is different and it overclocks different. You should not use the same clocks that others have found stable and you should do your own testing and see how much the card can handle stable. And never use automatic overclocking programs that aren't able to oc the card as it should.

i have the MSI 4850 OC version (bumped to 650MHZ core). temps are quite cool at around 45 idle and 70 load.
try smaller steps in o/cing.
