Still recovering from a huge crash and trying to get my NIC working again. I keep getting an error that Msgsvr32, and then Rndll are not responding.

Prior to this I get momentary freezes of the (USB) mouse cursor (polling?). When I terminate the two programs mentioned above all the system freezes go away - but I don't get a network either.

What are they, and why do they hate me?

You wrote Msgsvr32 but I think you meant MSGSRV32.EXE!

What is Msgsrv32.exe?... It's a program that runs invisibly on the Windows desktop and performs several background functions necessary for Windows operation. These functions include:

Mediate Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system.

Coordinate automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files.

Display the initial logon dialog box if networking is enabled.

Play the system startup and shutdown sounds.

Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown.

Run the shell program (usually Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond.

What could be the problem?... Wow.... there is soo many things that one would need to know in order to properly sort the problem.

Places to look.... NIC driver, modem driver, sound driver, network monitorig software, or simply a corrupt "msgsrv32.exe" file (check version).

BTW: have you recently recovered from a virus aftermath?

No virus aftermath, just a brutal crash from a connection short. It seems to have scattered numerous bits and pieces, and necessitated hard drive corrections etc. The re-installation of 98SE and the incessant return of ScanRegistry seems to have done as much harm as good...

I think the NIC driver/installation is at fault for the current problems since they all go away when the NIC is removed from the system. I had been having crashes related to many of the items you list including explorer, shutdown etc.

The version I have is dated 4/22/99.I guess that's the original from disk?
