MSCONFIG

hey guys,
im really new (i think this will be my second post) and i am having a problem. i have a computer at work that is running windows 98 (software that we use here for unlocking cell phones will only work on windows 98). well, when i try to run msconfig there is an error, windows cannot find the files to run this. im trying to get rid of a lot of start up apps. can someone please help me out. i would like to do this without reinstalling everything. thanks in advance.
i think this will be my new home. i hope i posted this in the right place.

Well, you can remove startup apps manually. I'm not sure what files msconfig requires to load.

First check the Startup folder on the start menu of course.
Then use the run dialog to start "sysedit". The Win.ini and system.ini files may contain lines like "load=" or "run=", edit those as needed and save, just like notepad.
Then run "regedit", and search for the word "RunOnce". When it's found, there should be also a Run, RunServicesOnce, maybe another that I forget. The Run key usually contains most of the startup apps, but the others may as well. Delete any you don't want running. If you search again for RunOnce, it will probably find a second set of those keys, which may have other apps loading. You'll probably want to make backup copies of each set of keys just in case you disable something important and need to restore it.

Evermore hit on everything that can make a program startup automatically. But I would be a little worried about my installation of windows if MSCONFIG wasn't present on the computer, or if it just didn't load.


Also, there are a number of free/shareware programs that do the same thing msconfig does - so you might want to get one - download.com usually has a decent selection of way too much software

Try Startup Control Panel. I use it for WIN2k since MSCONFIG doesn't work in WIN2k... and it's a great app. Can run standalone or installed into a "control panel" feature.
