Msconfig Core Bootup?

I went into my msconfig, and then into boot, and then into advanced options, and it said " number of processors " and a box beside is unchecked and the number was set to one. I checked it and I clicked on the drop down menu and it listed up to 8. I set it to 4. What difference does this make? Bootup speed, etc?

some sites claim this improves boot up time. it may be a placebo effect, i set mine every time i do a format to it. i have not seen any benchmarks proving it does or not
