have a ms 6389 mobo with a 1.2 athlon cpu running win xp pro intergrated sound and video. been running
rock stable for one month. decided to format the hard drive as i wanted to put w2k pro on it.formatted it
and put cdrom driver in and now it wont post and i cannot get into bios. if i leave the hdd connected
it says i have a non system disk. if i disconnect the hdd, all i get is a blinking courser at the left
hand top of screen. if i put a system disk in the floppy drive it will take me to a A: prompt. took mobo
out of case to make sure it was not shorted out. does same thing. if i put a disk in the cdrom and
type DIR, it reads the files. never seen this before. any help appreciated...slyedog
 
So at this point, if you start the system from a stop, can you press the Del key and enter the BIOS?
 
by using a floppy boot disk, i can get the a:\ prompt. then i put a cd in the cdrom and type e:\dir and
it reads the files on cd. i also can read the files on the boot disk. but it will not post so i can hit delete
and get into bios.
 
Freaky! :Q So if you try to POST with no bootable floppy or bootable CD in the drives, what happens, exactly? Does the screen just stay blank? I wonder if it's attempting to recover from a corrupted BIOS.

I am unable to find a manual to download from MSI for that board, it doesn't seem to exist on their site whatsoever. 🙁 About all I can think to try is perhaps reset the CMOS, and replace the CMOS battery if clearing the CMOS isn't helping. Sorry 🙁

tried the cmos but to no avail. this is a strange one. thanks again
 
formatted again and copied win98 to hdd and typed setup and win 98 loaded. put win xp pro in and it
is loading xp pro. but it will not be a clean install??????
still doesnot post and still cannot get into bios
