MS Word not able to handle more than 1 GB RAM?

OK, I posted this problem yesterday, and I think it's now fixed.
I used 1024MB RAM foa ages, Word 2000 worked fine, had a break from Word, added 256MB RAM (1280 total), Word crashed with a "could not find mem" error, or something like that.
Took out the 256MB stick a little earlier, and it hasn't crashed yet (before it did after about 3 mins or so)

Can Word 2k not handle more than 1gig ram?
