MS Word: How does one "reveal formatting codes"?

My father in law seems to need to know how to reveal codes in MS Word (not sure what version. Maybe xp or 2000). These codes are all of the formatting ones, so that he can finely tune the format of the document (not an html dump of it). How does one find this? I've not checked, since I don't have it installed. TIA!

in the toolbar look for the thing that looks like |P that, or a paragraph sign.

AFAIK WordPerfect let you edit raw formatting codes but at least the Windows versions of Word never have.

Not sure, but is that the alt-F9 thingy?
