MS Word Document Recovery

My sister has been working on a 15 page paper, word crashed, told her to save immediately. She saved, reopenning the files provides several lines of boxes and only 15 lines of text. The word .tmp file is still there but it can't be open, because WINXP thinks the file is in use. winword.exe is not an active process, but if anyone knows what process might be using this file, it would help extensively.

Also, if anyone knows if the .tmp file will still be there during a restart, OR if there is a way to recover the sorrupt document, that would be amazing. Finally, if anyone knows how to opem that .tmp file without restarting, that would help.

Thanks for any help in this matter,

Jeff

My computer has crashed before while I used Word. It usually gives me a recovery panel when I load it up again, offering several backup temp files that Word had created.

unfortunately, the recovery panel doesn't load, and using File..-->Open--> Open and Recover didn't work.
