MS Word Bullets and Number are "Messed up"

I open a file.. and the bullets and numbering "format" are all screwd up.. I see a bunch of weird symbols non standard to the "native settings".. how do I prevent this... this happens only on one of my comps

Bullets and numbering can easily cause word documents to corrupt. This is a known microsoft issue.
