MS wireless desktop pro issues

I have just got the microsoft wireless desktop pro to replace my older Logitech itouch wirless keyboard mouse. I am having a strange problem with it currently, when its all plugged in I cant use it on my sofa (approx 7 feet) BUT if I plug in a normal optical mouse it works ? why would plugging in a optical mouse somehow boost the signal it make no sense at all. Also when it does work its not quite as good as my older itouch has anyone else got any experience with these.
