MS windows 2k3 Server license Q.

A User CAL applies to a User, which means the user can access the server from any machine without needing a seperate license. A device CAL is a CAL for each computer or device that access the server. They did this to give you some flexibility in licensing. For example say you have 15 users that share 5 machines. You would go with Device CALs since it's cheaper to buy a CAL for 5 devices than 15 users.

Or it can go the other way. You have 10 devices and only 5 users. You would only need to purchse the 5 User CALs instead.

I have ~20 computers hooked up to 1 Server.

Which one do I need?

All 20 computers (software running) need to access 1 Server at same time.

I assume that I need 20 Device CAL on the Server??

I forgot to mention this orignally. When you install the server you have the choice to license the server as per user or per device.

Well that depends. How many users do you have? If you only have 10 users then it would be in your best interest to license the server as per user instead of per device. But if you have 25 users for those 20 devices then it's in your best interest to license per device instead. Of course if you have just 20 users for those 20 devices then it doesn't really matter which one you choose.

baiscally 20 computers will be use by upto ~12 users ( 2 dentists, 5 front dest personel, and 3-4 assistances).
12 users does not need to have uniqui user id. Basically they are trying to use the dental program. They do not store any personal information on the machine, and the machines are not connect to WAN.

When there is only 1 user id using 20 computers (dental program) connected to Server is that conserder 1 user? or 20 devices?

Is the connection limitation limited by number of CAL?
win XP Pro has 10 connections limitation.

20 computers will be logged on to the server at same time.

Basically, dental program (client and server program) will be logged on from 20 client computers to the Server.

One thing that Dentists/personels want is keep the dental programming running on all the machine so he/she/they do not have to close and open the program each time he move from station to station.

So each client computers need to be logged on to the Server.

Thanks for your help.

it seems like it does not matter which one I choose but I need to have ~20 CAL.
