I read about this in the newest MS TechNet mag and thought it was worthwhile to post in the forums here:

Windows Easy Transfer Companion

This essentially is an improvement over the original Files and Settings transfer wizard.

Windows Easy Transfer helps you to easily move the files and settings stored on your PC running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or even Windows Vista to a new PC running Windows Vista. Windows Easy Transfer will automatically transfer things like:

* User Accounts
* Files and folders
* E-mail messages, settings, and contacts
* Photos, music, and videos
* Windows settings
* Program data files and settings
* Internet settings

Thanx. Stuff like this should already be included. What took them so long?

😕

Easy Transfer is already included with Vista.

And FASTW was included with XP.

And USMT has been available since god knows when, at least 2000 SP4.

Easy Transfer is already included with Vista.

Thats the Wizard, this is the Companion. Thanks for reading the link anyhow. 😉

Edited with the following to help loup out:
Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer, and can transfer the programs with either an Easy Transfer Cable or a network

Now that I clicked through to the download page, I do see this actually transfers program installs (albeit only the "100 most popular"), which is an impressive feature that Easy Transfer doesn't offer.

Anyways, I was responding to Dari in the context of your OP -- it describes Easy Transfer, not the Companion -- it doesn't talk about transferring programs and mentions Windows 2000 support, which the Companion does not. Hence my confusion.

Yea, I do agree the list is not all inclusive, but I felt it was worth a mention. I'm currently evaluating home backup solutions, and while I love the WHS server, I'm finding it rather difficult to acquire the necessary $599 to buy the damn thing. I also run the same software on all of my PCs so that they are redundant in their duties, ie: if my gamer rig goes down I have a backup gamer already updated and holding the saved games from the other PC, so that's why I thought it was a nice solution to a problem.

i used USMT3.01 a few weeks ago to migrate from my old dell laptop to my new XPS m1330. worked pretty well and no complains here. i'm gonna wipe the old drive soon and run Ubuntu on it too 🙂

Can "Easy Transfer" be accomplished to a new Vista computer with only the hard drive from the previous computer? IOW, with the old HDD installed as a slave or in an external case, can the programs installed thereon be transferred?
