Im at a public pc right now and I want to download all critical security patch and updates for my pc at home which is not on the interet.

I dont know exactly where to go when I get to microsoft.com. I go to the update place but it tries to scan this pc. And if I try to manually choose what progs to install, all I get to choose from is multimedia packages. I'm not very familiar with the microsoft site very much and I'd like to stay as short as possible.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Well, most of the critical security patches are for when your computer is connected to the internet. As long computer isn't connected I see no problem with not having the patches, unless one of them fixes your computer crashing. I would just wait til you get your computer on the internet itself to install the updates.

whats not safe?

Almost all of the MS patches address internet vulnerabilities when you are connected to the internet. If you have a pc that is not connected to the internet AT ALL, for one, you are not as vulnerable, and two, it makes it difficult to install the patches.

You can request the patches on a cd that Microsoft will send you.

My advise is to get connected, and then do a Windows Update asap.

Apply all the patches, do your reboots, then setup your pc to be notified of all new critical updates.

but again, what did you mean when you said "Thats not safe

"
Im at a public pc right now and I want to download all critical security patch and updates for my pc at home which is not on the interet.

based on your statement above, your pc at home is not connected to the internet. How would you be at risk of a hacker seeing your data, or taking control of this pc if its not on the internet.?

Also, there is a fine chance that the public pc you are on now is infected to hell and back. Also, don't expect to download most of the patches and throw them on a floppy disc. Many of the patches install a small program, that is used to download the main portion of the patch. XP SP1, and DirectX 9 are two that come to mind.

If your pc at home is not on the internet, then you are not in a critical need of any patch that microsoft has on their windowsupdate.microsoft.com site, with the exception of perhaps XP SP1. SP1 addresses bugs in the os that pertain to alot more than just internet connectivity and security.

Good luck.

this pc= safe. its ghosted once every 2 weeks and has updated nortan all over. Were in the networking class.

my pc= not safe. I havent been able to update for a year.

updating online=not safe for my pc because i could potentially be hacked because im so unsecure. plus, its an xtra secure way.

There's a beta testing of all the Windows Updates put on a CD. If you can wait till that finishes or find a way to be part of that beta testing process, you would have all your patches on one CD.

Or just get the latest service pack for your OS. It should have most of the updates you need. And you probably won't need the later ones as they usually deal with security issues with won't be needed as you aren't connected to the Internet anyways.

About updating online, just enable your firewall before you connect to the Internet. Most hacks won't be able to hit you when you have that enabled and will give you enough time to get the updates.

No hacker is going to see your pc when you put it online to run the MS updates. Don't be so paranoid.

It will take you about an hour or less to fully patch your pc as long as you are using broadband. Tell me what hacker is going to see your pc within that hour or so, let alone your single pc out of millions out there.

Hackers gain entry to unsecure systems when the users of those systems start browsing the internet looking for porn, emails, etc.

Put your pc on the wire, immediately go get MS updated completely, and you are good to go as long as you don't do silly things such as open any and all unknown email, browse porn sights, etc.

It doesn't take a hacker to see you, most of the recent worms are automated and will get you in under and hour if you're not patched.

I got myself a nice free copy of slammer and began "practively sharing" it within 5 minutes of connecting to the network at the beginning of the semester ;).

Agreed. The firewall will block 95% of the stuff out there and most of the other 5% you're going to get by going to some site you probably shouldn't be going to anyway. I've brought many new machines for people on the wire w XP firewall enabled and the OOTB NAV 2003 defs from '02 (remind me to update those on my install cd one of these days), gone directly to WU & LiveUpdate and have not run into a single issue.
