I'm not sure what's worse: the fact that they put together a blog dedicated to the development of a logo, or the logo they ended up coming up with.



CGA is back in style, apparently.

It would be odd to have an attractive logo with Metro being as ugly as it is.

At least they're consistent.
 
Just take into consideration that usually there is many designs done by professional graphic designers.

This designers are not computer engineers, they are commercial Artist, they suggestions to opinion groups and try to get ratings and the reactions.

The ultimate decision is done by the client (after seeing the research results), the client (in this case Microsoft) not always think that the best solution is the ""Enthusiasts"" way.

AFAIC, the XP, Vista/Win, and the new logo are all nice.

Honestly, I think it's kinda fitting, I just find it hilarious that it took a group of highly professional graphic artists to come up with it. They could have just asked the secretary on her spare time or something.
 
I actually kind of like it, myself. Simple yet clean looking. I don't think flashy rendered graphics are always necessary.

I like the serif font also. I'm really getting tired of sans serif. It's supposed to look "modern" and "sophisticated" with "European styling", but it really says "I'm a pretentious wanker, and I follow, not lead".

Actually it means "I like it when my text is easier to read on an LCD screen."

But I'll take a non all caps logo, not only is it easier to read, but the word is faster to read because most times I see a word I see it's shape first. Small Caps/All Caps eliminates this very common thing done while reading. So that first Windows logo is harder for me to read and it looks weird because the word shape is incorrect.

So readability wise (and as such for recognition) the new one is better.
 
All this reminds me of is a box of Corn Flakes being repackaged as 'New and Improved!' with the appropriate new logo. Whatever. I don't buy stuff based on how their logo looks... otherwise I'd have an AMD processor...

I don't think it's really that bad. They seem to be going for simple and bland with Metro so this fits in perfectly.
 
I think they should have stuck with Segoe UI Light. The 'I' and 'W' look uncomfortably close. Also, the text and logo don't look like they line up quite right to me.

Overall I just prefer the old icon, a monochrome version would have suited me just fine.

Ah! Now I can see a connection with the new bright Lumia Phones from Nokia... apparently, CGA is really back in style 😵 ...or something like that
 
Well, generally speaking, the quality of M$ software has been inverse proportional to the quality of logos and UI: The uglier, the better.

So, Windows 8 seems to become a good system so far, that logo is atrocious.

No joke, but I honestly prefer your actual Windows logo.

What's with the colorless, drab baby blue? Gimme the red, blue, green and yellow any day!
 
I don't think the new logo is great, but it's much better than the old ones. Good logos work in monochrome vector graphics, and are accented by color. Rainbow colors, gradients and detailed textures don't go well with anything. With the exception of this new logo and Windows 1.0 logo, all Windows logos are failures.
