"SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. will make its new Windows Vista operating system available for sale and download online, marking a new step for the software company, which has previously sold Windows only on packaged discs or pre-loaded on computers."

I really dig this part:
"Microsoft also plans a promotion that will let buyers of Vista Ultimate get $50 copies of Home Premium for two other PCs."

Well, seems that using Anytime upgrade to go from Home Basic to Home Premium is going to cost a lot more than some expected..

"..from Home Basic to Home Premium for another $79"

That's double the $40 difference in price of the retail versions..($199 and $239)

yeah I might look into this. Be nice though if Microsoft offer the downloads for a cheaper price though. Your not getting any manual (most of the manual in the help and support in windows) included or packaging materials.

now are they just offering the full retail edition for download or is it going to include the upgrade editions as well?

I may not have looked closely enough, but do you have to buy Ultimate from the D/L service in order to get the $50 home premiums? I would prefer to have the package in my hands for whatever reason when I buy it 🙂

It applies to any retail version of Ultimate.

Very nice then.. 🙂 I was wondering how long down the road I'd have to let the wallet cool before upgrading the wife's XP box.
