Mercata has Toshiba Celeron 650-MHz Satellite Notebook, 2805-S201 for $1635.20. after using the $100 it becomes about $1535. and by using the passport 20% off it becomes around $1230.
it has Cel 650, 13.3 TFT ACTIVE Matrix, 6GB, etc.

i think this is a good deal
but not sure if we can use all the $100 on one purchase

CDW has them for
$1699

Mercata had the PIII700 version of this laptop with 15" XGA and 20GB for the same price two days ago... I think I'll wait for it to appear again.

Toshiba--it was the 2805-S401... I didn't act soon enough--would have been ~$1200 with both discounts. I'm desperately hoping they'll relist it.

RossMan--

Yeah I know--now you see why I've been crying for the last two days... I simply cannot believe that I missed out on that. If anything I could have sold it on fleabay for $1200 profit... but I actually wanted it for myself!

I spoke with customer service at Mercata, and the rep didn't seem to optimistic about getting any more in... but I am holding my breath.

P.S. It is possible that they had a pricing mishap on the S401, because retail on that is quite a bit more than $1600, but make no mistake... that is what the price was as of Wednesday AM at 9:30 central. By the time I looked again (at 11am) it was no where to be found. When I called and gave the item number the rep just said "oh yeah that powerbuy ended early because all the units got bids".

If only I could go back in time...

luv2chill - Yeah I'd be crying and muttering a few words if I were you, to miss a Toshiba P3/700 with DVD for only $1200. Even if I didn't have the money which I don't, I'd find a way to get $1200, Wow!

Spec--

Yeah I would say that lappy is still a warm to hot deal. Yeah it's a celery, yeah it's only got 64MB RAM, yeah it's only got a 6.5GB HDD, yeah it's only got a 13.3" screen, but it's still got 8x DVD, built-in 56K and Ethernet, Active Matrix screen, etc.

If only it had at least a 14.1" screen I would jump on it... a Celeron is not that bad (this ain't a desktop replacement or anything) and RAM and HDD can be upgraded, but that screen!

I guess I just can't justify paying the same price for this laptop as I would have for one 10x better. But I'm still sulking over missing that deal.

These laptops are new models and I haven't seen too many reviews on them yet. What I have seen is that they're pretty big and heavy, but feature-wise they're excellent.

this is actually a bit off topic, but to those of you who is thinking of purchasing a laptop using MSN Passport deal, I would suggest making your purchase at Mercata. The other site listed on MSN that has lots of laptops as well, mpsuperstore.com, is actually run by MARINE PARK CAMERA & VIDEO, INC. I just found out from a whois lookup because the site looks a bit shady and it's hard to find the detailed company information within the site.

Just a bit of background information on this company, they are known for selling used (and all kinds of) units as new. They were actually blacklisted in the laptop industry because of that. At least that's what I got from working at one of the major laptop distributors in the nation.

I don't know if they still run their business the same way, but I would urge those who have put an order in at mpsuperstore.com to inspect their goods very thoroughly. Don't be fooled by the outside look. Inspect the box and especially the unit itself. Check the unit for scratches.

Not trying to bad mouth the company or anything. Have nothing to gain by doing that. Just want fellow Anandtechers to know who they are dealing with.

Hope you guys get all the hot deals! :)

Just reminding all you lurkers and those of you who are on the fence, you DO NOT HAVE TO BUY ANYTHING TONIGHT. All you need to do is at least register with Mercata to receive your 20% off discount (up to $100 off $500) and you can still use this with the MSN Passport 20% off until 11/30/2000.

So let's say you don't get paid until the end of the month? Perfect you're covered! You only have to REGISTER today, not actually buy anything. But you do need to use your Mercata dollars on or before 11/30/2000.

Also this Toshiba Satellite notebook is now down to $1221.43 after both discounts, sweet price!
