Is it just me or is this thing wholly unusable as an offline email client? Plus, why doesn't it mark things as read when the message is displayed in the preview pane?

Because it is a preview pane....not a "read" pane. duh. You are previewing it, not reading it.

I use it all day at work, and have not had a problem with it. Not sure what you mean but offline email client.

when i'm disconnected from the VPN its offline as far as the outlook client is concerned as it can't access the exchange server. during which it basically can't do anything.

and it'll mark it as read, just when i move to a different message. i want it read as soon as i click on the message. in fact, i'd like to mark things as read without reading them at all.

btw the new version of outlook fixes this problem, it caches everything for offline use.

why would anyone in their right mind even use outlook or outlook express?

Of the top ten viruses that occurred during 2000/2001, all ten targeted Microsoft*
applications and nine of the ten specifically targeted Outlook*/Exchange.

Customers implementing Outlook/Exchange endure the results of virus attacks
because of Microsoft?s lack of attention to security in their implementation of
scripting languages, automated functions embedded within data files, HTML and
ActiveX*. Architectural oversights and bugs further contribute to Microsoft?s lack
of foresight regarding how its products can easily be used by nefarious individuals
to disrupt business. Despite issuing at least 13 security-related patches for
Outlook/Exchange, and publishing at least 100 technical articles regarding
Outlook/Exchange security-related issues, viruses continue to plague their
customers. Notwithstanding the heavy burden of tracking security issues and
managing patches, and despite many excuses, Outlook/Exchange customers
continue to suffer and there?s no simple resolution on the horizon.

well since i use it at work, and it is attached to exchange, it is always open and never offline. It only goes offline when the company is having computer problems (probably once a month or less). I think it works perfectly fine for that. I don't use it anywhere else, so i wouldn't know.

seems like a giant oversight, not caching messages locally. i'm not willing to shell out the money, i only need it for about 3 messages a day. or less.

as for why outlook, you got me there. the smtp server was being used by spammers. instead of going to authenticated smtp they went to exchange. seems like a step back to me, since i have to be on their network to get my messages. as opposed to pop3 that i could get from anywhere.

just to clarify a few things

1, Outlook DOES support working offline in an exchange environment, you just have to enable offline folders
and it will create a .OST file and you can sync back and forth with the exchange server when you connect to the network.
this has been in place for years.

2. Exchange IS a pop3 server as well (if you want it to be)

3. To mark messages as read just right click and select "mark as read" or right click the folder and mark ALL as read

the problem with 3 is that it still puts the message in the preview pane. and the other part isn't discriminatory enough.

maybe they should have enabled exchange to be a pop3 server. i'd like it better.

it already says theres offline folders if i try to open outlook without connecting to the VPN first. theres nothing there.

you have to connect at least once and syncronize the folders before it will work offline.
