Is it just me or is this thing wholly unusable as an offline email client? Plus, why doesn't it mark things as read when the message is displayed in the preview pane?

when i'm disconnected from the VPN its offline as far as the outlook client is concerned as it can't access the exchange server. during which it basically can't do anything.
and it'll mark it as read, just when i move to a different message. i want it read as soon as i click on the message. in fact, i'd like to mark things as read without reading them at all.

btw the new version of outlook fixes this problem, it caches everything for offline use.

just to clarify a few things
1, Outlook DOES support working offline in an exchange environment, you just have to enable offline folders
and it will create a .OST file and you can sync back and forth with the exchange server when you connect to the network.
this has been in place for years.
2. Exchange IS a pop3 server as well (if you want it to be)
3. To mark messages as read just right click and select "mark as read" or right click the folder and mark ALL as read

the problem with 3 is that it still puts the message in the preview pane. and the other part isn't discriminatory enough.
maybe they should have enabled exchange to be a pop3 server. i'd like it better.
it already says theres offline folders if i try to open outlook without connecting to the VPN first. theres nothing there.
