I use MS Outlook at work. Now, I have a crap load of emails in my inbox. Some of those emails are older than 1 year. If I try to delete those emails older than 1 year, I get an Outlook error saying, "The message interface has returned an unknown error....". If I delete emails that are less than 1 year, I can delete those. Very odd. Any ideas?

Try posting in another forums besides Off Topic. Mods might move it anyhow.

As for you question, I have no idea, although Outlook has always been great for me. Good luck. :D

Sounds like your .PST archived them/and or corrupted itself. Try splitting your .pst into two separate files.

but his inbox as he states it as being... is not a .pst file.

it is true a .pst file can get corrupted... particularly if it is near 1.9 GB.

these mails that you cannot delete... can you successfully copy/move them to a personal folder (archive .pst)?

I hate users that end up over the 2GB limit, they can still use it over the limit but, bam, all of a sudden you get corruption. Then they complain when you give them a .PST that's under 2GB but it's a week or 2 old and all that mail is lost.
Yes you can run it through the tools and get some of the mail back, but it's really messy and most likely not much more back then when I restore from back ups.
