HELP! My optical mouse has been locking up of late where a beep sound comes from the motherboard and my optical would lock up for a few seconds, the laser also goes out. This also happens without the beep. My keyboard works fine when this happens. I've tried everything, switching from ps/2 mouse port to usb did not help. Tried other optical mouses and the problem still occurs. Tried other things in the usb slot where the mouse was and no problem there. Downloaded the lastest mouse drivers did not work. However, I switched to a regular ball mouse and no problem. Is it my power supply can't handle an optical anymore, or something wrong with my windows or is it my motherboard. My system is a 2.4 P4, 512 DDR, running windows XP professional. Please any help is appreciated as I am sick of using a crappy ball mouse. Thank you.

Have you tried another optical mouse? It sounds like a broken mouse since you've swaped it out w/ another one, check the usb port w/ other devices, reinstalled the latest drivers. Maybe an IRQ issue? Give it a try changing the IRQ settings. If nothing works, try another optical mouse.

Yes I already mentioned I tried other optical mouses and the same problem occurred for them also. The another stuff I've used in the usb that the mouse was plugged into and experience the problem all worked properly. I highly doubt if it is the ps/2 mouse or usb ports. Right now I'm using a ball mouse in the ps/2 mouse and no problem. Everyone should know how annoying it is to use a ball mouse! Looks like my computer and the optical mouse got into an argument. :-(

You have the same problem with PS/2 and USB. Did you install the software and did you pick the correct mouse from the list?

I have four Microsoft Optical Wheel mice. The last two Microsoft Optical Wheel mice I bought came with IntelliPoint 4.1 Mouse Software. When I went to reinstall the software after a reformat I grabbed an older CD with 4.0 and got a pop-up message that said it wasn't compatible with the currently installed OS. So I assume IntelliPoint 4.0 doesn't work with XP Pro, but 4.1 does.
